photoshop elements 10 or paintshop pro x4

I am at a state of confusion.. I already own Paintshop Pro x3 Ultimate. They want $60. to upgrade to X4 Ultimate. Now Elements 10 is out. What are most of you all using ? or which way should I go. Thanks

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. There's a demo of PSE 10, and I would presume of PSP as well, so I'd just download both and see which you think suits you better. With PSE you'd get a wider variety of options than with just PSP, but it's also a different workflow, so it might annoy you more than it's worth.

X4 Ultimate is worth it for the Nik Color Efex Pro 3 filters alone. I find it buggy though just like other versions untill a patch comes out. For use of the filters it's worth it to me to use along side X2 but not as a replacement yet. I use it as a second PSP plugin in LR for the Nik filters.

So far for me the text tool is really buggy and the Manage tab is unusable for me which I don't need anyway. For layers work I am getting lockups that resolve after a couple of minutes of waiting. Once the bugs are worked out this should prove to be the best version yet and a real bargin compared to paying $700 for PS CS5. At least for the average photographer.

What does PSP4 do that your current version doesn't and is it worth $60.00? I still use XI and haven't seen the need to upgrade.

You can always download the 30-day trial of PSPX4 and compare it. Quite honestly, I don't think you'll notice much difference from X3. I'm evaluating X4 against my current X2 version, and I can't see enough difference that justifies the upgrade cost. Maybe in a few months when the price will have dropped, but with the exception of the Nik filters in the 'Ultimate' version (which I'm not sure I need anyway) I cannot see the need to update immediately. Corel also has a reputation for releasing "buggy" first editions and allowing users to "beta test" them, so it's probably wiser to defer for a few months.

The only thing that PS Elements will get you compared to PSP is a much less friendly User Interface, there's nothing that one will do that the other will not.

An incremental upgrade from one version to the next is rarely useful. I just "upgraded" from PSP X to PSP X3 and found most of the functionality identical. There were a few new bugs in the X3 version, and perhaps one or two new features.

I'd recommend getting Elements. I'm still using Elements 3, and both love and hate it. Some tasks it handles far better than PSP, others I find I'm fighting against its foibles. But nevertheless, I believe it complements PSP very well, giving an alternative approach.

In addition, Elements should give access to the Adobe Camera Raw plugin, which in itself is a useful capability.
