Need some advice on getting a flash bracket for use with a D700 and a 200-400mm lens on a tripod with a wimberley head.

Hi Debra. You did not state what the intended subject would be but I think even old me can deduce that you want to catch or highlight birds or wildlife considering the set-up you :-) :-). Yes?

Since you are using the 200-400 then I would think only the SB-900 AND the Better Beamer will work for this particular set-up for the distance guessed at.

Good luck.

Hi Debra, I knew I was tired after long tough work week out of the country but not sure how I read flash unit when you asked for flash bracket.

Sorry for my senior moment :-(

Ok, going to take a nap now :-)

Oscaroos,

No worries. Aim shooting with an an dismiss and better Beamer, now I just need a flash bracket and they are anywhere from $24 on up and don't know what to look for in one for shooting birds and wildlife.

Glo,

Thank you for the response, I have checked Really Right Stuff but not sure of what I need or should look for for what I shoot.
Presuming you use a dovetail / arca plate on the bottom of your 200-400 you need something like this...

http://reallyrightstuff.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=B87-QR&type=4&eq=&desc=B87-QR-Flash-Bracket- (Medium)

Pieces like this are of VERY good quality and are priced accordingly - $250+ - if you have a constrained budget you may wish to jury-rig something similar using a few spare arca clamps...

If this is going to be a long time peice of hardware for what you do then apply the "tripod rule" - buy the best and buy it once.....

Thank you for your response I did look at this one and like the option of being able to move the flash to different positions, do you think this is better than a bracket that has a flip?

Here's the setup I'm using Debra:

D300, 200-400VR, SB900 + SC 28 flash cord & BetterBeamer flash extender & RRS B 87B flash bracket + Manfrotto 680B pod, Wimberley Sidekick & RRS MH-01 heavy duty monopod head & B2-Pro II s clamp.
(since upgraded to D3s & 500VR)

Cheers
Marc

Nice set up Slugsworth I like the flash located in the center of the lens so much better than above the camera. Thank you for sharing.

I use a Wimberley flash bracket. What is neat about the Wimberley plates is that with the double dovetail it is easy to add a bracket with a minimum of hardware and extra stuff to setup and carry into the field. The support people at Wimberley are great at answering questions like yours - give them a call.

Debra . .

If you have not used a flash bracket you may want to borrow or rent one first to see how you like them. I HATE those things! I bought a Custom Flash Bracket as I was so convinced I needed one. After I got it all hooked up with the proper cables etc I felt like some crazy half assed astronaut! You go from being a person with a camera to a person with a ridiculous contraption. Whatever (possible) stealth feel you may have felt with just a camera and flash goes flying out the window and you begin to feel like a nut job with a erector set stuck in front of your head. Anyone and anything that sees such a contraction coming at them wants nothing to do with you! smile What's worse is . . it completely changed the way / style I take photos. To me gear should enhance what we do organically, not change it. So I will say, keep it extremely simple if you HAVE to get one. I used mine once . . I have not used it since. Of course we are all different and have different needs.

The OP is looking for a bracket for shooting "birds and wildlife" ( as she said in her second post )...

You seem to be commenting on shooting people with a bracket - COMPLETELY different genre and needs...

A flash bracket with a Better Beamer is THE only way to shoot at focal lengths 300mm or further away - even if the light is fairly good it will help considerably to highlight and freeze action id needed...

This sort of set up ( like an RRS set-up as many have eluded to ) is a great compliment to a 200-400 lens on FX as even the beam pattern will be pretty good = not much vignetting - if shooting things like birds or less than full frame subjects...

Higuma, totally agree with you, for what she needs, the photo Slugsworth posted of that setup is the bomb. Solid, flexible, durable.
