Hi,

I've owned an NEX5 for over a year and have shot a lot of video and created a few films.

I can say that I managed to get a crash film course using it and overcoming its limitations.

I am now ready for the next step and I am wondering which camera to buy: A NEX7, NEX5n or maybe a Canon 60D...

Looking forward to your insights.

i dont see any benefit of the nex7 aside from the mic input (with no audio level control). the 5n body can be had be $600.. its a steal.

the 5n also has touch to zoom, allowing you to focus on off center things easily.

+1 Nex 5N for video, and the attachable viewfinder with 90 degree angle capability makes it more versatile than the NEX 7 (plus touch-screen focus). No brainer for video.

Thank you guys! But doesn't the NEX7 have a higher bitrate?

No, where did you heard that?
I had canon 7d and i gave it for nex 5n... Superior video, and1080 50p!

Cleaner high iso, full auto focus with face-object tracking and focus peaking, any lens to put ..... What else do you want?

I'm sorry, not a higher nitrate but a higher resolution sensor (24megapixel).
Would this have an effect on video quality?

I'm getting an nex 7 because I do both video and photography and need the controls of the 7. That said, the nex 7 can only go up to iso 1600 in video where as the nex 5n can go up to iso 3200. So if low light is important to you, the nex 5n performs better.

Higher resolution, is almost uselless in video... you get only 2K from 24 Mpixels.
Bigger issue for me , is better video in low light ... with 5n of course.

Nex7 has less "rolling shutter" effect so movement looks nicer in 7 that in 5.

actualy, for video use you want a sensor with less pixels. e.g. the sony FS100 nex camcorder uses a dedicated video sensor at 3.5mp.. this is to give you TONS of dynamic range and less moire and less rolling shutter.

its one of the reasons i wont be getting the nex7.. a nex7 with the 16mp sensor wold be perfect, imo

This is interesting and important.

Has this been tested?

Do you know of other advantages that the NEX7 may have over the NEX5n when shooting video?

Thanks

According to the german forum Club Sonus (they are in possession of a NEX 7, Firmware v0.10), the NEX 7 goes up to ISO 3200 in video mode.

That's great to hear! EOSHD says that it maxes out at iso 1600 for video where as the 5n maxes out to iso 3200. I asked him if he is sure and he said yes. I'm not sure which firmware he had but it was about a month ago when he told me..
