A good flash for s2pro

ok i know Nikon SB-80DX is the best thing...but is 450€ tax included

Is there anything (also of other brands) that is similar to sb-80 dx, and is more cheap?
It's not important that is powerful as much as 80dx..i can be satisfied...

main point: i want a flash that use the same ni-mh batteries of s2pro. (such as 1850 mma)

What is your esxperience?

or sb 80 dx is so good and usable for many...many time from now?

thanks to all

I have a Nikon SB28 and a Sunpack 433. The Sunpak is less expensive and works TTL as does the Nikon. The SB28 I like because of the bounce card and flip down diffuser. The price of the SB 28 has come down.

Luca,

I bought a used one (was only 6 months old and has a 2 year warranty, so 1,5 year warranty still left!) for about 220€ (netherlands)

Much Nikon users who maded the step to the D100 are selling good SB28's cos they need a DX type. (Sb28DX or sb80DX)

Cheers,
Richard.

excuse me what is the difference among Sb 80 DX and Sb 28-DX?

I'm sorry for this stupid question...

Well the 80DX is the follow-up from the 28DX flash. There are some differences between them. You can see the Nikon.de site for the specific details. Ofcourse the SB80DX would be the best.

But the big advantage from the S2 is that he's able to flash TTL / DDL with almost every Nikon flash. See also the S2 manual for the specific types.

A Nikon D100 or Nikon D1 MUST have a DX flash to do that. So that's why the SB28 (without the DX) is easy to get on the used market cos people who had a analog nikon camera used non DX flashes. They have now bought a Nikon Digital (mostly D100) and can use all there old lenses but not the flash and have to buy a DX flash. The most buy the SB80DX and sell there old SB28 (non-dx) flash(es).

So my advice is that you must try to find a normal SB28 (used or not) which are cheap to get now and put that on your S2 cos the S2 makes no difference between a SB28 or SB28DX and will be work exactly the same. Fully TTL suported on both of the flashes.

The 28DX was firstly special made for the Nikon D1 slr.
But correct me if i'm wrong here.

very good thanks Richard.

Can anyone confirm me that sb-80dx use the same batteries of s2 pro (ni-mh)?
How many of them?
If yes I can buy 3/4 set of 4xni-mh 1850 mma and a very fast charger.

2 set for the digicam (no Cr123 at this point i don't need internal flash and alla the rest work correctly, isn't it?)
1/2 set for the flash

In this situation all will be ok ?

no?

thanks

I personally would steer clear of a Nikon Unit as they are overpriced and pretty much underpowered. Try a metz unit with the appropriate nikon af sca module, the great thing about these units are they can be used with different cameras. I have a sca adaptor for my e10 and one for the S2 and they both work very well.

Regards

Nick

The SB-80DX is overprice thats True, but no that much more than the Metz units. The SB80 has a metal shoe, wireless and has DX. while you don't need DX for the S2 your next camera may, also works with the D100 if you needed to hire a backup unit.

If your budget allow, take the Metz, you can't critize any for such a portable flash gun, illuminaton coverage, enough fire power,...

The Metz 54 MZ 3 is the most comparable with the Nikon SB-80, for about € 150.00 less. It has got high scores in a German magazine review some time ago.

Cheers,

buy the sb80 either one its a remarkable flash unit and you will never have a bad shot!!!

I use a 20 year-old Vivitar 3700 (Nikon compatible model) ...It's TTL, and I called Vivitar and confirmed that the voltage is compatible with the S2.

I recently purchased a Sto-Fen Omnibounce diffuser for it, and am impressed with the early results, even with a 14mm wide angle. The diffuser works great and only costs about $15, and you can pick up a Vivitar 3700 on eBay for about $30...there was a brand new one on eBay this evening with about an hour left on the bidding... not sure if it was Nikon compatible.

Light up the room with any good TTL flash and let the camera do all the work.

Hey there,

There's no need for an expensive DX flash, because older Nikons work just fine. The olders Nikon D-TTL flash is the SB-25, which I got really cheap. Works just fine, don't think I'd win anything with a more expensive one. SB25 already has the 20mm diffuser and a flip-up reclector, works fine with NiMH batteries.

Also, I understand that the guide number is the same as in 80dx (42).

Check out this link: http://www.photozone.de/2Equipment/nikonflash.htm

Yours,

Jussi

I am using a SB-26 I picked up used.

It works great, TTL and all the rest, has a wireless function like the 80DX(the sb28 does not) and is quite inexpensive used.
