Just a thought on the new mirrorless pentax

Since a few people (including, originally, me) have so much trouble "searching" for the relevant piece of information that reveals the true nature of the Q's two shutter systems , I'll break with internet forum tradition by doing the search on behalf of the lazy, rather than just saying "please do a search before posting".

Yes, the Q has in-lens leaf shutters in some of the system lenses. It also has an electronic shutter available for non-leaf shutter lenses, and it can also be used with legacy glass, like c-mounts.

So here it is, straight from the spec sheet available right on Pentax's website, bold print added by me:

Shutter

Type: Lens shutter, electronic shutter** Shutter speed: 1/2000 to 30 sec (lens shutter), 1/8000 to 30 sec (electronic shutter w a lens shutter lens), Bulb ** When using the electronic shutter setting with a non-lens shutter lens, shutter speed 1/8000 to 2 sec , Bulb, aperture adjustment, and ND filter setting NA.
Doesn't have a focal plane shutter..... so you can't use any C lenses.

Please do a search before you start an new thread.
Please do a search before posting incorrect information. You'd see that a focal plane shutter isn't required for the Q to work with non-Q lenses. The camera has an electronic shutter.

C-mount adapters for the Q are already being sold.

Q camera has in-lens leaf shutter

So it has an electronic shutter that works from 2 sec. up to 1/8000 sec. If that is so, and the spec. sheet seems to say that-why are leaf shutters needed in the lenses at all?

Why have two shutters?

Obviously, there is something here I am not understanding.

The electronic shutter has a couple of limitations which the leaf shutters don't have. 2 sec minimum shutter speed (compared to 30sec + bulb with leaf), flash sync at a near-useless 1/13 as opposed to up to 1/2000 with leaf shutter. With both shutter systems, they can accommodate both leaf and, with those two limitations, non-leaf lenses.... something I didn't think the camera was capable of on first reading.

I have a feeling that electronic shutter is for movie mode only. Sure, I can be wrong, but this is what I feel

The reason you are wrong is that at least three of Pentax's own Q lenses do not have a leaf shutter.

Do you think those lenses are for movies only?

"Three additional lenses also are announced. Each offers outstanding value at an affordable price so users may produce a variety of distinctive, dramatic images. Each features manual focus operation, fixed aperture and lightweight lens mount minus a lens shutter unit to reduce size and weight."

Electronic shutter is for use with lenses without leaf shutter, though it can also be engaged with leaf shutter lenses, according to the Pentax specs. It is not for movie-mode only.

You know what? All this info is soooo readily available on the internet - and you're one of the posters who wrote "search before posting". Now your mantra seems to have shifted to: post whatever you "feel".

Yes, I suspect these 3 lenses for movies only (they have no aperture controls and look more like CCTV)
