On Intel MacPro SnowLep I can't stop Safari from accepting cookies. Tried all options in prefs. Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanx all
Tom

when I try to download extensions apple site tells me that I need to install Saf5.1 first.

I don't know about Safari 5.1, but with Safari 5.0.4 (running under Snow Leopard), you would open Preferences, click on the "Security" tab (padlock icon), go down to "Accept cookies:", and click on the "Never" button.

There is also a "Private Browsing..." option in the Safari menu.

and how is that an answer to my question? or helpful in any way at least

The option you need is to tell Safari Which cookies to block - not what to accept.

The option is in the Preferences.

Hellooo... 'tride all 3 options, still get damn kokiz. Any way to blok them all?!!! Am I talking swahilli?

Try Firefox! I think it has better control of cookies and history that any other browser.

It's also free.

I don't know about Lion, but it is possible that Private Browsing allows the computer to accept cookies but then deletes them, no matter how the options in preferences are set.

This is probably a distinction without meaning for the OP. And I could be wrong.

Agree, and I also think earlier versions of Safari were much more straightforward about cookie management. But still not as good as Firefox-which has a few other charms going for it as well. I generally use Safari, but Firefox comes in handy many times for reasons irrelevant to the OP, so I'll not go on...

I found that this site will not allow posting unless cookies are accepted though.

Hello Will-there has been a recent change in DPR forum behavior regarding Safari-I haven't checked it with other browsers.

In the past, once you had things set up, which did involve setting a cookie or two, you then could leave cookies off and could freely navigate and post. The site probably recognized your IP.

That has changed-maybe about a month ago. Sometimes the site cannot even be browsed w/o cookies.

1. You will find that you only need cookies enabled for your initial page opening or two. If you're paranoid, or just don't want to remember to disable cookies after your DPR visit, you can turn cookies off and continue to navigate and post on the site.

2. I suspect the majority of people leave cookies enabled, but choose the option to accept cookies only from the site visited, but not third party ads, etc.

3. Important: You may have to delete both the browser cache and the browser history once the DPR site has "rejected" your browsing and/or posting, and after you enable cookies.

Again, these are recent developments, and #3 is a real pain! No other forums I visit or post in behave this way.

As someone else mentioned, if you really want to manage cookies, another browser (Firefox) is a good choice. But for the majority of users, Safari is just fine. And fast.

You can delete every cookie and try to block everything, but somehow the cookies repopulate without you going to that website.

There are more than just browser cookies. There are also other types of tracking cookies like Flash 'cookies.'

It is almost impossible for you to avoid cookies. I delete all the cookies and within 10 minutes, over 18 cookies are back in even if I did NOT navigate to those sites.
