moon

Davidk,

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I did have a little trouble focusing. I have since bought the angle finder, haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I hope it will make it easier. This was taken using the Celestron NexStar 8" SC. How do you like yours?

Gordon
Thanks, I fiddle with it and got it to work like you said. Nice
shot. Gordon, did you have any trouble focusing? Are you using
just the regular Canon adapter? I've got a Celestron NexStar 8" SC
with all the right bits but I haven't done much yet. Davidk

Hey Gordon,

Yes I did crop. The moon was near the top of the frame. Here is the framing on my D60 before crop:

Have fun,

Mike
Thanks for the reply. Wow, nice shot! It looks like you got really
close. Did you crop much?

Gordon
Thanks for your moon photo.

Here is a shot of the moon I did for testing my new lens ( 300L IS
both 1.4 and 2X teleconverters stacked ).

I really like the NexStar 8, it's my 2nd scope - the middle one - 'cause I plan on tradinig up one more time to a 10 or 12" - if I can actually manage to carry it.

But, the NexStar is really good. Quite easy to align and it does stay on target. I find that, with the D60 on - because of the weight, it does take a bit more to get and stay on target, but you can do it. The mosquitoes this year drove me inside most of the time and right now it's just too darn cold. But I have to get out soon. Are you using just the EOS t-adapter?

Gordon:

I have a Canon D60, magnifying angle finder, variable T-adapter and Meade LX90 SCT. I've found accurate focussing with the D60 to be difficult due to diopter adjustment offsets.

Do you have any techniques for fast, accurate focussing with an SLR body? Use of a Hartman Mask has been suggested to me on this forum.

Thanks!

Brian,

No, I don't really have any good focusing techniques. Actually, I'm just a beginner at astrophotography, & need a lot more practice. Unfortunately, here in Ohio there are not too many oportunities this time of year :) What's the story on the Hartman Mask?

Davidk,

Yes, just the EOS t-adapter. I just bought the angle finder for the D60 & and also a Microfocuser from Starizona, http://www.starizona.com/

I hope these will make things easier, but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

Gordon:

Basically, a Hartman mask is a circular disk with two or three equally spaced circular cutouts arranged radially around the axis. By placing the mask over the objective lens of your telescope, you'll see two or three overlapping images in the eyepiece/finder. When these images completely merge, the image is in focus, regardless of how focussed it appears in the camera viewfinder.

This seems to be the same principle used by some rangefinder cameras. I have not tried it yet, but intend to.

Have fun moon/planet/stargazing!
