XZ-1 Tips & Tricks

  1. In the Oly Viewer, the rotate picture buttons do not seem to work: is there a fix to this?
the front wheel (around the lens) will rotate images in Viewer.
Yes, when viewing in camera, but once transfered into my pc, the rotate buttons in the Olympus Viewer 2 software do absolutely nothing... :(
Oh, sorry... yes, I use Picasa to view mine, it automatically rotates... :(
do you have 'pic orientation' set to 'on'? in the camera settings?

No worries, I use Picassa also, but I use the Oly Viewer to transfer the images.

The Oly Viewer has more editing features than Picassa and I'd like to try some out, but not being able to edit/save to network drives just makes it more hassle than it should be...

In bright light, hold down the "Info" button to temporarily increase the brightness of the OLED screen if you can't see it very well.

For a quick access low light mode that actually works, set up your custom mode as follows:
Auto iso
shutter priority (so that auto iso actually works)
centre weighted metering (because matrix underexposes in v poor light)
flash off.

Choose a shutter speed you can hand hold, or use tripod. Compared with near useless built in 'low light' mode, you will be impressed (in very poor light)

Can you limit the hi end of auto iso to , for example, 1600 ? Or will it insist on going higher without my input ? thx.

Regrettably not. Nor do you know the iso the camera has chosen until you review the shot.

Against that, with the fast lens, and effective antishake system, you can handhold a low shutter speed which means that the chosen iso will be as low or lower than almost any camera on the market.

I had heard about the diving mode work around, but the other may be a but cumbersome (I don't have a ZX1 ...yet!)

Surely this, and focal range lock, could be / should be a firm ware update?

Knowing OLy of late, we will have a ZX2 with some better features next year! Hopefully not a dumbed down version, rather the opposite- more customisability and perhaps user defined P mode scales etc.

My experience is in Aperture or Shutter Priority mode (possibly even in Custom), Auto ISO works very well for picking the right ISO. But in P mode, it tends to stay too much in ISO 200. I like to program my camera to 1/100 in S mode with Auto ISO. I will usually get good pictures in door.

too bad..no auto iso. Seems the new Fuji X10 fares no better there. Nikon's is best at that. Why can't one maker have all the good stuff ? :)

Is Auto ISO - or high ISO for that matter - really necessary? Just looking at the statistics of all my 491 keepers shot with the XZ-1, the vast majority were shot with ISO fixed at 100. None were shot using Auto ISO.

ISO 100 - 93%
ISO 160 - 2%
ISO 200 - 5%
greater than ISO 200 - ZERO

The IQ at base ISO is so good that any tradeoff's in terms of slower shutter speeds are worth it IMO.

(XZ-1 + Raw + Lightroom = magic combo, but convert to DNG for faster previews).

I found this tip on the XZ-1 Discussion group on Flickr.

One thing hidden in the manual - hold INFO down for a few seconds to get a temporary LCD brightness boost (only while shooting, doesn't work in menus). You can only return the LCD to normal brightness by either toggling into and out of Playback mode or turning the camera off.

With Olympus Viewer2 version 1.21 software, not only the six Art Filters of the XZ-1 can be used, but a total of 10 Art Filters. All for the experimenting.

Depending on the shooting mode, the Control Ring alters its functions, according to this table found in the Q&A section at Olympus Japan web pages.

Custom mode will retain a complete set of alternative colour settings for Vivid, Normal, Mute and Portrait if you want. Just set them up using the menu and then set Custom mode through the menu. You will then need to reset your chosen default settings for normal use, but the alternate set you created will still be available via the Custom mode.

Hello, I noticed that when using the camera in timer mode (2 sec or 12 sec), after a single click the timer is automatically turned off. I tried to save it to custom mode but it doesn't work. Its quite frustrating when you have to go to the menu and set it again and again....

I frequently use the 2sec timer when exposure is long & the camera is mounted on a tripod. This way there is no shake; whatsoever.

Has anyone faced this problem? Does anyone know the solution?

no... its the silliest thing ive ever seen. try taking a self portrait. its a pain in the a.....s

the fastest way i find is to push the ok button to go back to the selection and select 2 or 12 secs.

cheers don

I don't think there is a solution. But I don't think it is all too uncommon either. All the P&S cameras I owned behaves the same - timer is cleared after one shot.

At least Olympus makes it easy to access the timer option. Press Down once and you are default to frame setting. Then left, left and you get your timer engaged.

If you are just shooting something/someone on a tripod. A cheap remote shutter cable will do the trick. I bought one for less than $2 on eBay.
