Nikkor Lens

AF is Auto Focus
What do the designations ED, D, IF & so on
mean?

Thanks
ED = Extra-low dispersion glass

D = Distance. There is a chip in the lens that tells the camera what distance it is frocused at. Supposed to help with exposure, particularly important when you are using flash.
IF = Internal Focusing

AF-S = Silent wave . The focusing motor is in the lens, and the focus motor in the camera is not used. Faster and quieter.

G = The lens does not have an aperture ring, so it can only be used on modern bodies that allow you to set aperature from the camera body, such as the N80/S2. Mostly used on cheap consumer lenses but that is starting to change, for example the 24-85 AF-S G lens, which is pretty cool.

The rule is, the more letters after the focal length, the more money they want for it!

ED refers to high quality glass elements in a lens
D has chip which delivers distance information to subject for 3D metering
IF is Internal Focus which means the lens does not change length when
focusing ..
