Have I got a hot pixel? Help!

Joey,
I think you do.
Try this test using this software
http://www.starzen.com/imaging/deadpixeltest.htm
Follow the instruction in the readme file.

Nice article on hot, stuck, dea pixels

Let us know!
You do have warranty right?

Good luck!

Geting my G3!

I bought it from B&H last wednesday, and it arrived monday (2 days ago)... unfortunately I am from Australia, and therefore the Canon USA warranty will not cover me. I am hoping the B&H return policy will be sufficient? Do you think they will cover my shipping charges (it was $80 to ship here...)??

It looks like a hot pixel to me. Download this app and know for sure:
http://www.starzen.com/imaging/deadpixeltest.htm

This thing works pretty good but you have to make a test shot first by going into a really dark room like a bathroom with no windows and take a long exposure in the dark, say about 1/2 second. Then direct the program to that image file and run the test. Also note that you can run the test at different sensitivity levels.
Click on "Original" size at the bottom and look inside the circles...
Thanks for looking!!

If they don't then try local canon service center. They might accept! never hurt to try.

If I understand correctly, as mention in B&H website, that US warranty will be accepted anywhere in the world.
I really want to know if that is true!

good luck!

don't tell me your real name is Joey Jeremiah! I thought for sure you'd be Canadian...wow...the long arm of Degrassi?

Cheers,
Dan

BTW, I did see a slightly off colour dot, but I wouldn't have thouht it a hot pixel. Also, from what I've gathered, all DCs have some hot pixels, though the severity of the problem varies, and it gets worse as the camera gets older. There was a thread in this forum about a program called Spot Kller (or maybe SpotKiller...or something like that) that detects hot/dead pixels and maps them out for you. Just do a search for it...if I find it first, I'll let you know.

I used the dead/hot pixel test, with RAW, converting to Tiff....

I did exposures from 1/2000 to 1 second, and then a 5 second to see if the noise reduction would kick it out...

As I expected, the 5 second exposure didn't show any hot pixel, but all the others had these pixels as hot:

X Y
=====
877 601
878 601
879 601
877 602
878 602
879 602
877 603
878 603
879 603

ie... a BIG square... 3x3

Will dirt on the lens cause this kind of a problem (it seems to symmetric)??

I would consider trying to get Canon to honour my warranty in Australia, but they don't have any G3's to replace it with anyway - which is why I bought mine from the US to start with.

Has anyone had experience sending back cameras to B&H - do they cover Shipping both ways?

I hope they do honour it... but regardless - I am travelling to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand (my reason for purchasing the G3) on January 4th - and Canon Australia are really dragging their feet getting the G3 out to everyone - I made an order here a month and a half ago and still haven't received the camera... so I ordered from B&H instead - and received it in 4 days.
I just want a fully working G3 for my trip...
Thanks for looking though mate!

What's more, when I lower the threshold for hot pixels to 10, it reveals that even more pixels surrounding the ones listed below are hot - so basically I've got one big fat hot pixel...

I'm really bloody annoyed because I can just see me going away on my two month holiday to South East Asia with no G3... :(

it's not hot - a hot one will always be in the same place always. try it with the cap on, and see where they are. it might be a warm pixel... in either case it's a muted color, easily fixable, i wouldn't worry about it.

I just called Canon Australia and they will actually honour the Canon USA Warranty because the USA warranty is a worldwide warranty. So all is not lost I guess.

What do you think about me taking the camera on my holiday and then getting it replaced? G3's in Australia are really rare - I don't want to travel without my camera.

don't use that program. it's faulty, as it reports everything with a certain amount of luminance as bad. stars, moon, highlights etc - are all bad.

Aren't you supposed to use those programs with a shot taken in pitch darkness?

mate it was a shot of my lens cap (100% black) - no moon or stars there. If you follow the instructions it is pretty good.
