OK! I don’t know about you folks, but this challenge period seemed awful long to me, which is sort of ironic since half the entries came in on the last day. Maybe we should do 1 day challenges?! – lol.

Anyway it’s time to vote! – and it’s going to be tough. There are a lot of good entries for this challenge:

http://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/shadow_challenge

Voting will end Friday at noon and I’ll announce the winner that afternoon. Again, anyone can vote whether you have submitted an entry or not. Vote only on the Challenge Gallery and the person with the most points gets to host Challenge 5! Yippee!

PLEASE PUT ALL VOTES IN THIS THREAD and use the following format for your votes:

First Place (9 pts): Title of Image
Second Place (6 pts): Title of Image
Third Place (4 pts): Title of Image
Fourth Place (2 pts): Title of Image
Fifth Place (1 pts): Title of Image
As many honorable mentions as you would like to name.

Also please take a look at the exhibition gallery and make comments to the individual photographers. Some of these folks were unable to enter the challenge and they submitted some outstanding work for the exhibition. Please take some time and check this gallery out: http://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/shadow_exhibition

You may post your choice for best exhibiton photo, but DO NOT include it in the challenge voting.

Thanks to everyone for participating – the photos are great and your suggestions and thread bumps were helpful!

OK let’s do it…

Kathy

With such fine entries, everybody is a winner, even those who did not enter gets to enjoy some great photographs!!!

There does seem to be a problem with the "translation" of the photos to the display site. Whether due to re-sizing or the software, there is a lot of noise and jpg artifacts in several, particularly sky scenes, that I know wasn't in the photos as submitted. Just curious about this.

Anyway, here are my votes:

1) Shadow Reflections

2) Mary Sunrise

3) Orange Umbra

4) Rack Em

5) Anticipation

Honorable mention to all. I would award every one of these at least a 3rd place if I could as they are each superb and reflect the best spirit of the competition.

My regards to all entrants and exhibitors.

On the last challenge someone took to time to comment on each picture. I liked it very much, I could then see what made it a good shot and what was not so good. So I did put a comment on each shot. Just remember this is just my opinion and I am in no way shape or form an expert and I am not trying to be.. This is just as I see it and nothing more.

I do not want anyone to get upset about the comments. They are just comments and nothing more. I think everyone did a good job and i hope everyone had fun doing it, I know I did.

First Place (9 pts): Shadow Reflections
Second Place (6 pts): Anticipation
Third Place (4 pts): Shadows
Fourth Place (2 pts): Light Color and Shadow
Fifth Place (1 pts): Rack ‘Em

The Tree, The sky was very bad, had a lot of noise, and I did not like the lens flare

Anticipation, clean and neat and to the point

Romantic Sunset, To phony looking, not much to it.

Shadows, That is a shadow, very geometric.

Orange Umbra, Not really a shadow or a silhouettes, but a very nice shot.

Please Leaf Your Shadow… I would have like to see more of the leaf and the berries.

Shadows of Time, Not really a shadow or a silhouettes.

Rocky Shadows, It was way to busy and had not real subject.

Fire, I did like the sparks making the little strings of light.

Mary Sunrise, It was to hard to see what it was and the sky could have been nicer.

Light Color and Shadows, very nice shot, I did not like the side, I would have like to see the nice blue all the way across.

Off the Wall, I did not like the frame at all, it took a lot away from the shot. The subject was more the flower and the frame then the shadow.

Early Start, I did not see a shadow or a silhouettes as the subject.

Rack ‘Em, This is a very nice shot, the shadows are good and it is very simple and neat. I like the deep color.

Crescent Egg, Not a shadow or a silhouettes

Posts, The shadows are there but the main subject is the post, not the shadow.

Shadows of Silhouettes, Just to busy, I could not keep my eyes from roaming all over the place.

Something to Crow About, I don't know there was just nothing interesting in it to me.

Narcissism in Silhouette, The silhouettes were to close. It took be a second to see what it was.

Shadow Reflections, I love the shadows, and the geometry of it it all. I think the refections add a lot to the overall look.

Idle Oaks, I was drawn to the clouds and not the tree.

Silhouette Silhouette, It is not a silhouette and the shadow is sure not the main subject.

but these are my picks in the Challenge Gallery:

First Place (9 pts): Shadow Reflections
Second Place (6 pts): Rack em
Third Place (4 pts): Shadows
Fourth Place (2 pts): Light Color and Shadow
Fifth Place (1 pts): Romantic Sunset

Honorable mentions, hmmmmmm, lets see. I honestly and truly have to give each of the remaining shot Honorable Mention!! The work and thought that went into each shot is really evdent in them all. Fantastic work guys and gals!

The Exhibition Gallery had equally fantastic shots. If these were in a separate contest, this is how I would've ranked them:

First Place (9 pts): lbanez
Second Place (6 pts): Abstract Wine Holder
Third Place (4 pts): Memories
Fourth Place (2 pts): Daylight
Fifth Place (1 pts): Shadow Rider

I thought this was a really good idea for a challenge and was anxious to enter....so anxious, that I completely misread the rules and submitted a photo that was taken outside the photo eligibility period. Completely my fault and I'd like to thank Kathy for catching my silly oversight. I still had ball participating and even more fun looking at other folks submissions.

sometimes ya get what ya get and ya gotta be happy with what ya got........every photo can't be a masterpiece

First Place (9 pts): Rack 'Em (Simple and to the point of the challenge)

Second Place (6 pts): Light Color & Shadow (I can see you really worked for this one)

Third Place (4 pts): Shadow Reflections (good eye - this picture made the voting even more difficult)

Fourth Place (2 pts): Anticipation (I would have liked it more if the light point was not so bright)

Fifth Place (1 pts): Please leaf Your Shadow at the Gate (very well defined shadow here)

Congratulations to all who participated- great job, it was fun.

on many of your comments. Here are the applicable rules from the initial challenge post:

'Challenge Requirements: At least one shadow or silhouette a key element of your photo.'

Notice that the Shadow or silhouette need only be a key element of the photo. It need not be the subject of the photo . It may be the element that makes the subject of the photo stand out.

I think Kathy's wording allowed for individual interpretation of the rules as stated. I like seeing the different takes on the rules and how they were subjectively defined by each person. A too specific wording would only suppress creativity, imagination, and artistic license.

Therefore, I respectfully disagree with the following remarks:
Orange Umbra, Not really a shadow or a silhouettes, but a very
nice shot.
Shadows of Time, Not really a shadow or a silhouettes.
Off the Wall, I did not like the frame at all, it took a lot away
from the shot. The subject was more the flower and the frame then
the shadow.
Early Start, I did not see a shadow or a silhouettes as the subject.
Crescent Egg, Not a shadow or a silhouettes

Posts, The shadows are there but the main subject is the post, not
the shadow.
Shadow Reflections, I love the shadows, and the geometry of it it
all. I think the refections add a lot to the overall look.
Silhouette Silhouette, It is not a silhouette and the shadow is
sure not the main subject.

I agree 100%, that is why there are different pictures and different scores put in by different people. Again I am only stating it as I see it. I am NOT telling everyone this is the only answer.

I don't want everyone to agree, that would be very dull. As I stated in the first of the message.

"Just remember this is just my opinion and I am in no way shape or form an expert and I am not trying to be.. This is just as I see it and nothing more.

So I guess the question is how do you see each picture ?

Now as to rules to a challenge there are different ways to look at it. You could have very tight rules and not let any pictures in that do not meet these rules and see just how well someone could take a picture of the same thing. You could have no rules at all and just look for the best picture overall or somewhere in between. The only reason you have rules is to try and keep everyone on the same playing field.

This statement:

Only requirement is at least one shadow or silhouette as a key element of your photo.

The way I looked at KEY ELEMENT was the main subject of the picture. I am sure 20 other people looked at in a different way. Am I wrong ? Are all the other people wrong ? I don't think so, we all see things different and that is one of the Key elements of photography,

Challengre after challenge, votes become more and more difficult. The first time I opened the challenge gallery, it appeared like a porofessional exposition. How can I vote for such quality pics as I'm only an amateur ?

There are lots of benefits to be here, I learned lots of tips, everybody gave me ideas and inspiration; so I I would like first to thank everybody for the great job done.
And here's my choice:
1st place: Light Color and Shadow
Very pure lines, elaborated composition and light effects
2nd place: Orange Umbra
For the same reasons. A marvellous result from a simple idea
3rd place: Rack 'Em
Long shot, difficult to anticipate. Nice horizontal light
4th place: Shadows
For its simplicity, perfectly fits the subject
5th place: Shadows of time.
The only pic shot with "built-in" effects.
