I hate my new D100

My husband bought me the D100 recently and I haven't been able to
get a good photo yet. Everything I shoot is dark and the color is
off. It is driving me crazy and I am about to go back to my film
camera. I shoot with a Tamron 28-200 f3.8 lens. Anybody have any
insight as to what the problem is? I have tried adjusting the
white balance, but the results were no better.
Amy, check out my post, Wedding shot available light with D100.

Thanks for trying to help me. I spent the morning in the camera
store trying a different lens. The photo's are a little sharper,
but not drastically improved. I wish I could say that I was
schooled as a professional photographer, but I was not. I do not
know what "Dial in a constant EV compensation of +0.3 or +0.7 EV"
means. I would like to try this, if you have the patience to
explain it in layman's terms. Thanks...Amy
--post one of your photos. then we can see what they look like. i have had a d100 for about 6 months. taken everything from senics to auto-flash with an sb26 on auto. the photos are not the sharpest when straight from the camera. the camera does underexpose if there is any bright areas in photo. there are ways of handling the two problems in camera. all i can say is that i have taken and printed a few hundred photos. all responded to image manipulation in software. the information you need to work with is in the image. if you have no experience manipulating digital files you might as well find somebody that does or go to the library or book store and start educating yourself. there is a learning curve.

Sell it, and buy a CooPix instead. You'll get back some money, and take no brainer, near perfect pictures with a CoolPix digicam.

We all know GI will suggest the 28-70 f/2.8m AFS, 80-200 f/2.8AFS,
the 300 f/4AFS and $1000 of tripod. :)
You left out the 17-35/2.8 AF-S, the SB-80DX, and the MB-D100!
If you're in the US, you can then call me and
I'll try to walk you through some things that might help.

Hi Amy
Don't struggle, just send me your D100.
I love it to pieces

Thanks for the help, I tried pushing the camera 1 f-stop and this
did not solve my problem.
Did you do this in manual mode, or did you use the + - EV compensations. Sorry I confused you with the "EV comp" terminology earlier, as it seems like you already know how to do that.
The photos were a bit sharper, but not a drastic difference....Still trying.....
Is sharpness the problem or underexposure? Or both? For sharpness, try:
1) a different lens. The Tamron isn't all that sharp.
2) Shooting on a tripod
3) Set sharpening on hard

4) Set sharpening to none, shoot in NEF, and sharpen in post-processing. This isn't the most convenient solution, but probably generates the best results.

Amy,

I agree with the person whom talked about film processing correcting exposure vs slide for example. Even though I have used a digital 990, the D100 I find is more sensitive. I had a sick feeling of $2000 at first but personally I like to keep it on A priority. It is set up with most lens to underexpose I assume by design as it is easier to adjust. I have one lens, my Nikon 20 mm 2.8 that totally overexposes by 1.5 to 2.5 ! Unbelievable. Other Nikon lens I have slightly underexpose which I can not tell by the LCD but in processing I tend to adjust 90%. You can get super great results in JPEG unless you are a professional. BTW, I keep things on normal, manually set WB to -3 unless I am switching from flash to daylight all the time and then and only then go to WB of A.

I am not offering a lot of help but I know you will be greatly satisfied if you zero in on the problem (maybe you did get a bad one). This is a truely great camera.

No I am not a professional but enjoy quality pictures and the sharper the better.

All the things the film lab did for you previously, you have to do
yourself now on the computer. Exposure error compensations,
contrast corrections, colour corrections...... you name it. If you
have ever developed and copied your films in the darkroom, you
cettainly knew that pictures didn't come perfect out of the camera.
The film was only a starting point. If you had a lab do the work,
you never saw this. Likewise with digital pictures. What you get
out of the camera is often just a starting point.

There is defenitely a learning curve, but personally I have felt
it's worth it, and I'm having great fun at the computer doing that
little magic that turns a flat, dull picture into a sparkling
scenery.

BTW, I like my D100 a lot. And BTW, what I have written doesn't
guarantee that there is nothing wrong with you camera.

After reading many post and responses, I just have to ask. Is it many Idiots or just one compounded exponentially? Just a question of scientific inquiry.

I agree with Mike!
I like my D100, and could use a second body when using several
lenses. Send it to Sweden, I pay for the Fed-Ex!

Check my Pbase gallery, think the D100 performs well.

There are many imitators, and some good at that, but there is only one REAL Group Idiot--and I am an exponent of myself.
