Greetings,

I've just received my precious new S20, only to find that it really isn't as convienent/portable as I thought it would be. So I'm looking at switching it for a S100. One thing is that I know that if I do get this camera which is small enough to carry around in my pocket all the time, that's exactly what I'll do.

The whole camera seems very well built, but my concern is the LCD. How durable is it? Canon's site keeps suggesting that you really should just slide it in your pocket and go, but I'm concerned that if someone bumps into me or I forget I have some change in my pocket, there goes the LCD.

Any opinions? Are there any cases for the S100 that are thin enough to keep it pockatble yet provide enough rigidity to protect it?

Thanks.--Dan Moore

Hi,

They are extremely durable! The leather case I bought from Henrys.com is made by Canon and it can either be carried or looped through your belt. I prefer my belt as I don't even know I have it!

I've had my S100 since June 15th and it has been in my pants pocket every day. It is still in like-new condition, absolutely, no scratches anywhere. I carry nothing else in that pocket.

This camera has allowed me to take all sorts of business and pleasure pictures that I would have never had a larger camera. My 950 has sat in my colset all of this time.

I've carried mine around in my pants pocket as well and I've had no problems.... until a few days ago.

The lens cover does not close although the lens retracts and the camera works fine. I looked closely at the camera and I see that the ring surrounding the lens appears to be slightly dented, probably causing the lens cover to jam open. This ring is rather flimsy compared to the rest of the camera. I suspect that a crease in my pants together with some hiking damaged the camera. Perhaps the lens tried to extend in my pocket. I've never dropped it.

I wouldn't worry about the LCD. It is slightly recessed into the case.

Another thing to consider when carrying this camera in your pocket. If it is hot outside or you will be sweating you really don't want the camera to be in your pocket.

Use the leather case on your belt. It's small, convenient, and it will protect your camera...

Dan, I've had the S100 for almost two months now and am a very strong advocate for it (find that from someone who has owned another of the new cameras for 2 months). It is extremely durable. Among a few other things, its size is its strongest attribute. I don't carry it in my pants pocket, however, although that is do-able. I got a black leather-like Canon digital Elph case that I wear on my belt. It fits like a glove --- perfectly. It slips in and out like a Western revolver! There are many different size Canon Elph cases, though. You need the biggest one (which is relative) because the digital camera is a little thicker than the 35mm or APS version. Best camera among dozens that I've owned. Take it anywhere. Its simple to operate and has some sophisticated features IF you want to use them.

I love my S100, but it just got back from a 3 week vacation at the Canon repair shop for the now infamous E18 problem. It is a durable camera, however be EXTREMELY careful when the lense extends. Do not let ANYTHING get in its way. I think the small size of the camera increases the chances of leaving a finger or something in the way of the lense and the camera doesn't seem to react well to this. Also keep it in playback mode when stored so that the lense does not extend if it is accidentally switched on.

I have both the leather case from Henry's in Canada and the Elph II case. I use the Elph II case all the time. It is a bit tighter fit than the other, yet allows easy removal. The one from Henry's has a small pouch in the front that will hold an additional battery or CF card but makes it a bit thick for me.

Tamrac also makes a case that is almost a perfect fit, I believe it is the model 206.

DAN,

This morning the velcro on my case must have been loose and my s100 went crashing out onto the hard kitchen floor. I heald my breath as the battery came tumbling out and slid across the floor. I was praying it wasn't broken. I popped the little battery back in and turned it on...No problemo! Never would ever know it was dropped, not even a mark on it.

I haven't tried this, but given the size of my S1000 I was thinking some kind of cigarette case might do the trick. For what it's worth, I carry mine in my pocket, but if I were looking, that's where I'd look. Also a soap case for travel.

wow. that's not bad -- i'm surprised that didn't have some sort of effect on the optics.

in any case, thanks to all those who have responded. i'm nearly certain i will be exchanging the S20 for an S100, but i think i may have to go get the s100 first and do some quality comparisons for myself first just to make sure. almost certainly, though, portability will win out over quality...

thanks again!

RiR, i wasn't as lucky when I droped my camera by accident. It wasn't that big of a fall, but when i picked it up and turned it on... the auto focus was totally dead, absolutely no focusing at all no matter what i did.

lucky me... i only had the camera for a week.. i was able to get it exchanged at the store the next day.

i guess its not as durable as i thought it was, but i guess its just my luck.

Hi Dan,

I first bought an S10 sent it back after discovering it wasn't quite portable enough for my needs. I wanted a digicam that I could comfortably carry around in my jeans' pocket all day while on vacation. Otherwise, the S10 is a great camera, but the S100 is the way to go for ultimate portability. I've had my S100 for about 2 months now and love it. At first, I just carried it around in my pocket w/out a case. Although the LCD is somewhat vulnerable, it never got so much as a nick on it. Of course, I never carried anything else in my pocket besides the camera. However, I soon decided that a case that would protect the camera and also allow me to still carry it in my pocket would come in handy. After shopping around for about a month, I ended up ordering the leather Canon case that's included with the Elph APS and Elph Jr. cameras. The fit is a little tight at first, but otherwise it's perfect. It has a little hole on the top for the wrist strap and the Canon Elph logo on front. The tight fit loosens up a bit once you break the case in, so it's really not an issue. Actually, the tight fit of the case and lack of "accesory pockets" is what makes it so great. In other words, it's one of the few cases that's small enough to let you still carry the S100 around in your pocket. It's called the Canon "Soft Case S", and you can buy one from B&H photo for about $15. I hope this info helps.

You mean something like this?

I actually proposed the same idea a couple of weeks ago, although the above case was one of the "less appealing" designs! ;-)

Here's my original post:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=359285

I found a better case later on, but the link to the site isn't working now(?). Let me know if you find any better prospects! :-)

Dan,

For the price you've payed for it, you should be very careful and worry for the whole thing, not just the display. The camera i delicate and you need a lot of luck if you drop it. Personally I carry it on my belt, which is very practical - and in addition - I have a sling around my neck (which I've made myself), since I'm afraid of loosing my grip on the tiny camera. It will only take once...

I took out an exra 5 year warranty....all risks to cover any problems.warranty bought from Dixons in uk (I am NOT assocoated with them in any way). It cost me £100 for the 5 years. It means the kids can borrow it for school projects etc without too much worry on my part !

Check this out -

I went to the beach, and just to keep out moisture I put my S100 in a ziplock in my pocket.

Well being the genius that I am, I then proceeded to go swimming, forgetting it was in there!!

When I remembered I of course flipped out. All I can say is, thanks to my sister for buying the name brand zip locks.. it held!

The weatherproof case looks really cool, but its too expensive.. use zip locks!

I went to the beach (Hapuna, Kohala coast, big island of Hawaii) with my S100

and no zip lock. It didn't go into the water but some little grains of sand got into
the lens mechanism, and I heard that agonizing crunching sound when the lens
opened. I took it home and blew the sand out. It continued to work, zoom, focus,

etc. but the little lens cover wouldn't close. Two days later, the lens cover finally
closed. There might be a few grains of sand still inside somewhere but its
working OK. Boy, am I lucky.

When they tell you to never take a camera to the beach, this is why. I knew I

shouldn't have done it, but I figured I didn't go all the way to Hawaii to leave the
camera home. Now I know better.
