When I look at sample RAW photos either here on DPR, or from a friends camera, the 7d seems to have slightly better (richer) color and contrast, compared to a 60D or 50D. Is this just DPP or ACR applying default settings somewhat differently to the various sensors? Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes - many people on this site have commented on how DPP typically provides a noticeably better rendition of the raw image. The only reason NOT to use DPP is because the software features are not quite as powerful as others.

Have you tried using the same settings for images from both cameras to see if they look the same? I thought 7d and 60d has the same sensors so should they look the same at the end?

Color and Contrast are entirely your choice on any Canon digital camera.

hence, the default settings are, mostly, not really relevant.

I think there is sufficient difference between raw processors that any variation is due to the processor. You'd need to compare images with exactly the same settings to tell any real difference between camera settings.

It might just a well come from the kind of person who buys a 7D is more likely to a) want to do postprocessing, b) be fairly good at postprocessing, and c) outspoken enough to post here regularly.

That is, the effect is less likely to be camera based and more likely to be owner based.

I would agree, the differences are more likely to be the result of the person behind the camera than the camera, and how those images get handled between capture and viewing.

There may be another significant difference - the lenses. Those using a 7D may be more likely to use better quality lenses than those using the 60D (but is not always the case).

I started in the 50's - my first picture was taken with a Leica and hooked me for life. I no longer use my Leicas, but I am still taking pictures. Some things never change.

I have 7D and 50D but I don't pay attention to this at all. Pp can do so much monor differences from modern sensors and lenses mean very little.
