Was out shooting in my home town last night and got these two shots below. All tripod, mirror up, cable release.

Nice job, very sharp. Thanks for sharing. Do you mind if I ask what processing you did? Or if you used a grad filter? The water looks either overexposed or just quite a bit brighter than the sky, and it's typically the other way around. Just curious to your setup! Thanks in advance!

Hello, yes there is a 3 stop hard grad there - most of the photos I take I am not really interested in "reality" as such and as you noticed (and you're completely correct) the sky is darker. A 2 stop would have been more "realistic". The photograph is still exposed well - the water has detail in it even at the brightest point in the centre - not all monitors will display that but the histogram is more or less dead on the money. A chap on flickr who is a woodturner in scotland - Angus Clyne does this all the time and his work is stunning so I guess I've taken inspiration from him - you should check him out.

All I did is increase some local contrast, bring down the rocks to make them slightly darker as they are really only to draw the eye into the scene.
Thanks for looking!

Great! Thanks for explaining and I will absolutely check his work out.

Edit - Went to flickr and realized I already follow him. He is very good! He reminds me of Patrick Smith on Flickr and Google+, he has been a big inspiration in my landscapes, even though I don't shoot much like him. Thanks again for sharing.
