GRD IV official

60 months since first release... 300,000 grd's around? Wow.
We have about 10,000 grd's per forum poster.
Or...
Forum posters are .00001% of all grd users.
I think it is latter...
No wonder they never listen to our requests.
I think from what I have read that most of them are probably in Japan where Ricoh is a more popular make.
The Japanese domestic market represents more than 90% of Ricoh's digital camera sales. And I believe that Tom (Caldwell) was correct when he wrote that Ricoh manufactures their cameras in batches, so I doubt the 300,000 number is correct, probably less than half that number would be a better estimate, say 120,000 out of which only 5% were exported all over the world, i.e. 6000 cameras. Discount the older GRD's and GRDII's that were already lost, damaged or simply forgotten in a drawer, and that would explain why so few posters here on dpreview actually own one.

There is a relatively active GRD community on Flickr, though.

I'm with you...I like their persistence in design, very much...

One of the key aspect of turning a good design to a classic, though, is to insist on it...
Pana lc1, was a very nice camera too..too bad they dropped it.

Nex 7 is promising, but I am afraid sony will go with shiny metal finish vs ricoh's matte...

Still better than fake old. Don't care much about the x100, for example...the new trend is retro, unfortunately...
Good minimalist modern design and functional layout is my preference.
When I look at the full sized picture of the IV used in the hands-on preview of this site :

.. I think how fantastic that camera still looks. The same thrill I got when the GRD I first came out and I was hooked by it's hardcore stealth look & feel. The 'I want to pick it up and use it right now' look of confidence and promise. Timeless.

It'll be remembered as an exemplary functional design classic one day and it's hard to think in those terms with regards many (any?) other digital cameras.

I mean, I don't really care what size the sensor is, as long as it has a wide enough ISO range and offers usable images throughout that range... I am disappointed that Ricoh made no sensor improvements though. ISO 800 and above on the GRD* is nothing to write home about, and we would have benefited from new small-sensor improvements.

Yes and on that score , a camera that would have been great would be a Sony R2

the sony R1 had a lots of things going for it and suffered from 4 big flaws that could easily be solved today

Interesting. So where do the Japanese users talk about their beloved camera? Any forums? With google translate it should be easy enough to follow their conversation. Are they asking or better sensors, new prime lenses, tele converters just like us...
Do they have armchair CEO's, I wonder...

They have a wood grip as well...it reminded me the kitchy American station wagons from 70s...

I have no idea. I can only guess they spend more time taking pictures and waste less time posting on online forums...
