Ken, i'm interested in the Canon macro lenses...do you use them with your 717? As far as usage do they have limitations such as causing bluring or darkening toward the outer edges of the images?
Very nice collection of pics you got on your web page...

Yes i did visit your site but i wasn't sure if the pics were or wern't cropped to eliminate blured edges and such...i'm also considering getting close-up filters instead of a lens but need to do more homework to see which would be the best option for the 717 in particluar...

Foxtrot:

In actuality the Canon 250D and 500D might be what you were referring to as "filters" in that they mechanically appear and operate in a similar fashion, i.e. they screw on to the existing camera lens thread. Many have another accessory thread also (for a filter perhaps.)

However they are, by definition, lenses and not filters. There really is no such thing as a "close-up filter." If it refracts and changes the focal length it's a lens.

That said, in addition to being quality glass with a quality coating, the Canon 'D' lenses are dual element lenses. This reduces artifacts, fringe focus problems and the like. It also, of course, increases the light path and the number of refractions.

You can see the results of a 52mm 500D in my PBase album. Almost all were taken with the +2 diopter lens, however many were cropped.

The olympus MCON-35 is arguably the best. It is 62mm; therefore, it requires a step-ring. It is indeed, a beautiful piece of glass. It's a bit pricey though @ $90US+.
