Hey I was wondering what kind of flash do you use and/or planning to buy???

I want the promaster but cant find any store in toronto that sells that flash. same with the sunpak 383, then theres the f1000 which is too expensive compared to the price down south, if you calculate it, it will roughly be around ~$usd160 without tax. ps the only place I know that sells photo equipment is henrys

so what are you guys planning to get and where? note: for some unknown reason I cannot access cameracanada.com

Sorry tjcad.. missed this thread as I was busy studying for my exams (still got two more to go). = )

I totally agree with you regarind the f1000.. it's just too expensive and if i decide to upgrade next year I'd be stuck with sony. I've just ordered a sunpak 383 (Dec 5) from a store in quebec (sabesh gave me the link) and it was shipped today (Ded 6). Here's the link:

http://www.photococan.com/itmidx40.htm

I'll be posting the results hopefully next week. I originally wanted to go with the promaster but it's just TOO EXPENSIVE.. somewhere in the range of the f1000 excluding the sony module.

I found the nikon sb22s @ cameracanada for, if memory serves, $178. The sunpak 383 was 137 so I thought i'd save a couple of bucks. Henry's prices seem a little high so I don't think i checked there. I just hope that the sunpak 383 willl be the right decision (couldn't be that bad since a lot of ppl here use it too). I'll keep you posted. Sorry for the late reply. = )

its ok, hey keep me posted on the perf of the 383, btw do they accept money order??? the place where you ordered the flash? coz I dont have a credit card. so what made you decide on gettin the sunpak instead of the sbs22 or the vivitar 285 ??? do you have any more reason on picking sunpak instead of the other flashes????? note: besides the price:

Heh.. the first thing I would have wanted to mention was price but since you don't want me to here's the other stuff:

1. Sunpak has swivel.

2. Vivitar looks cheap.. read some reviews saying it's very plastic-ly built (However, I must say that the reviews about it were good in terms of performance).
3. Vivitar doesn't swivel.

4. Haven't gotten much infomation regarding nikon flashes.. moreover, i don't plan on buying a nikon dc in the future unless they put a AF light in.
5. Haven't heard any problems or complaints with the sunpak 717 combo.

6. Argh.. have to mention the price here... sunpak is the cheapest but it gives you 120GN like the vivitar.. give us swivel which vivitar doesn't.. probably reuseable if i switch cameras in the future.

That's about all I can think of right now. Yep.. I'll keep you posted when i test it out next week (if it arrives next week).

No cc?.. hmm.. i dunno but I don't like buying stuff with money order. You should email photoco and see if they do. Better yet.. call their toll free #. They reply pretty fast for emails but calling them would probably get your answers faster.

Sabesh:

Hehe.. still awake? Done setting up the xmas tree? I've had enough of reading.. time for some sleep. = )

T

BTW: I Just ordered a MAHA charger with 4 NIMH AA batts.. doubt it'll arrive b4 the flash.. (another 60 something dollars CAD). = ( SOMEBODY STOP ME!

tanx

too bad I cant find the sunpak 383 or the promaster 5750 there

I might get the vivitar flash if i cant find the promaster or the sunpak locally. waaaah coz my dad doesnt trust online shopping :(

Vivitar's not a bad flash (as so many ppl mentioned). It just looks a little bulky to me and people say it's a little heavy on the camera so you might need a bracket (means more $$). = )

the one thing Im really cautious is that I saw some pics with the vivitar and it looks like it is too powerful.

Hey T,

Yep, still awake and hunting for a flash for my cam. I've located an online dealer who has the Sony flash for only CAD$188. However, it's out of stock. I tried to email them, but email got bounced back. Looks like Rogers has ACL'ed them for some reason. They are reliable, 'cos I've bought from them b4 with no problems:

Yeah, the trees got set up great .. Now have to decorate the outside: I shall leave that for tomorrow :-) ..

Later T,

Sabesh.

Well.. i just took some test shots.. the flash is SLOWWWWWWwww.. (when set @ full power) possibly be able to speed up a little if i had some NIMH batteries here but since I don't.. gotta stick with alkaline. The results are pretty good. However, I must note that I don't know what is good. I'm experiencing some major colour cast problem but this is mainly related to the colour of room I took the pics in. I'll keep you posted.

Well.. i just re-read the manual b4 going to bed and found that it's supposed to recycle within maybe a max of 1 min after a full power blast. I guess it's because i'm using akalines cuz it takes like 5 mins.. = )

Well.. it's sufficient enough to do a bounce flash on my dog... it definitly needs to set @ full power for that. See here:

... arge.. pbase is messed up.. just goto http://www.pbase.com/terluk and look for a gallery called: "Colour shift". It should be on the second page and there's a tree pic as the gallery pic. Go in there and you'll see some samples.

Does it over or under expose? yeah.. if you choose the wrong settings. I have yet to understand all the settings but what I can say is this isn't a auto flash. You'll probably have to fiddle with the settings .. do some tests.. and find the sweat spot for certain situations. I'll keep you posted when i get to test it more.. got work for two more days.. then have to study for exam coming this sat. = )
