I got this on Friday and walked around with it a bit today. Feels very good although its a pain to attach and detach via the tripod socket. I imagine using a larger lens like the 18-200 would be easier with this case. I wish it kept the strap loops in the same position as the camera as I prefer that arrangement.

Why is it hard to install.

Sorry but visually, I am not a fan of this case.

And what are the benefits of something like this? And cost? (mildly curious)

Thanks for the images. :)

Looks loose on the sides and doesn't appear to be very protective. I am pretty sure I will not be ordering this.

The tripod screw is a bit tight so it's not easy to quickly twist and secure.

The case definitely looks better in person. Close up and big it's hard to get a sense of it, but I wanted to make sure you could see the detail.

Mostly protection on the sides. If the silver finish on the Nex-5n is anything like the macbook pro, it could be a scratch magnet. I think it's around $35-45 depending on where you get it. Not too expensive for a little protection and additional grip.

It actually looks tighter on the sides now then when I first got it. The cushioning on the left side starts to mold to the strap loop.

Definitely not a case for everyone though I agree.

The material outer and inner material feels really high quality. For those who felt like the Nex-5N felt too small, this case helps. I like the 5N grip just fine, for me I just wanted to extra protection when I do walks with my kid and the camera can slide around trying to keep up;)

I tried out this case at J&R. (On the 5.) Not a fan. Even though it is made for the camera, the fit was not impressive. And I don't like the way it secures itself to the camera. It doesn't. Basically this case is held on by the neckstrap, and not by the tripod mount.

There is an add on case that covers the rest of the camera with the kit lens. That looked even worse, and more tacked on.

It definitely has a tripod connector on the case.

Looks like I might be the only one enjoying it.

Thanks for the reply. A bit steeper than I had hoped. Good to hear it could improve the grip (though, I must admit I have "girl" hands).

No mention of adding to the heat problem, though. I'm guessing it would prevent cooling of the body a bit...see threads about video heat.

I wonder if this is compatible with the 5 (and visa versa... sorta... if the 5 case is compatible with the 5n).

I have a 5 with the 5 version of this case and though initially I was disappointed with the new style of attachment (rather than the old school screw-into-the-tripod-mount type of connection for these types of cases), the looser thread-less peg with loops securing the case to the straps method has grown on me over the months. It has proven to be fairly secure in practice (never had any kind of mishap over the course of the better part of a year), and provides very quick access to the battery and memory stick compartments (I just unclip one side and flip the case up to gain access). As for fit, I don't recall how it was when I first put it on, but looking at it now, it's pretty much molded itself into a form fitting shape around my camera... so no real issues there.

Anyway, the point of my initial musing was... even though the 5 case has ended up growing on me (I am now quite fond of it, and actually kinda sad that they don't have a lens cover portion for the 18-200 lens), I am still curious about how a tripod mount case would feel on the 5.

Would be pretty great, if they kept the bodies close enough that the cases were pretty much compatible with each other. Would give users a greater degree of choice in the matter.

Looks very similar to those cheap Chinese NEX cases on eBay. They actually have a detachable top cover as well.

I actually purchased some of the cheaper knock offs (because they are tripod mount based, like the old school cases), and quickly gave them away (hey the recipients were getting them for free so they couldn't compain right? ;) ). The quality difference was immediately and abundantly obvious, not just in terms of fit (they were VERY loose on the NEX 5), but there was a very big difference in terms of materials and quality of manufacturing.

You definitely got what you paid for.

The bodies certainly look similar enough the same cases may work. I never had the original 5 so couldn't say for sure.

This case appears to be seriously oversize for the camera, particularly in image #3.
Looks large enough that it might fit onto a NEX-3. A one-size fits all?
But I like the case and I've ordered a leftover new NEX-3.

Thinking about it more... I kinda wish they gave this case the same loop attachments for the straps as well as the tripod attachment. Sort of a hybrid between the 5 and 5n cases.

Even better if you could swap out the tripod screw between a threaded and un-threaded one (based on your preference).

The knock-offs can be hit or miss. I bought the Chinese version of the Fuji X100 case and it did the job fine. Of course paying $25 was better than the $120-40 Fuji wanted.

Those cheap knock offs are really hit and miss. Readily available where I am (Malaysia). Tried a couple, and the one I bought secured itself very well to the camera (tripod attachment). What I was really impressed with was the side button straps. It looked so fiddly and seemed it might tear at any moment. But once I put it on, it felt excellent.

I removed the space but the link would not log.

The bottom piece that was pictured in the OP is not the same as the 5 version. The bottom of the 5N has a small bump that the 5 doesn't have. The top cases might be the same but the bottoms are not. This was confirmed at a Sony style store.
