These are 2 pictures I took with the 16mm kitlens.
OOC JPEGS, no PP. What do you guys think, are these ok or is the lens too wide?

If you don't get too close with the 24 mm equivalent kit F2.816, you will do ok. Just don't fill the frame with a face.

Try one full frame head shot and find out what happens ... BIG nose, small ear ..

Nice pictures of a lovely girl.
So just don't come to near with the 16mm.

I like the first picture much more, the hat gives a nice frame for her face. Yes, this hair across the face is not ideal, I would pp that - or try it once again.

In the first shot I like the hat and slight back light and how the light is hitting the beach chair in the background. As someone else stated, I do find the hair slightly distracting.
One nice thing about wide angle lenses for portraits is they work very well for environmental portraits. They work well for the shots where you want to include the background. Traditional portraits do their best to eliminate the background, which is not always good. The only thing about this shot that bugs me is my eyes are drawn to her right eye (the left eye in the frame) as it has more light hitting it and might be in better focus. I wouldn't worry about this though.

Nice shots and thanks for sharing!

I love both of these shots! The composition and background really add to the photos. I agree with some of the minor nits of hair in the face and focus not on the near eye, which would only turn great shots into awesome ones.

I am particularly interested in a 5N/16mm combo for environmental portraits, so thanks much for sharing.

P.S. "Dark Side of the Moon" is one of my all time favorite albums

I think the problem with 16mm portrait is that with that short FL and close distance, the perspective will make whats closer to the lens look a lot closer than whats farther away from the lens... so the nose will gets more "pop" than the eyes and ears....

its a nice cool affect if you like it... but when you look at a person you rarely see that kind of "3D on the face" if you know what I mean... hence that make the person in the picture looks a little odd.

but nice pics tho :D I take portrait with my 16mm all the time... only I will step back and crop it later :P

yes, I like 16mm portraits a lot! :-)

here two of my recent 16mm people shots:

Indeed, the 3D effect as you call it is not flattering, especially on "formal" portraits. Lovely shots above though, I prefer the full body portraits as well!
