I just purchased a Canon Powershot A40. Up till now it fully meets my expectations. I would like to start using NiMH batteries instead of alkalines and I already own several sets of Duracel 1800mAh NiMH batteries with charger. I would like to use these, but the Canon user's manual stresses that I should only use Canon batteries and charger.
What are the differences between Canon and Duracel NiMH batteries?
Does anyone have experience using Duracel NiMH batteries with the Powershot A40?

I hope your are kiding !!!!!

The site review of the A40 (I am just about to buy BTW) states it can. That's the reason I choose this one over the S230.

No I'm not kidding. Here's an excerpt from the manual:

Use of batteries not expressly recommended for this
equipment may cause explosions or leaks, resulting in fire,
injury and damage to the surroundings. Use only
recommended batteries and accessories.

  • If using AA-size NiMH batteries, use only Canon AA-size
NiMH batteries and charger recommended for use with these
batteries. Use of another charger may cause batteries to
overheat or deform, posing risk of fire or electric shock.

I used any kind of AA alkaine and NiCa rechargables batteries in my A40. Just don't mix different kinds.

Hi there,

The main difference between canon batteries and those of other manufacturers are that conon doesn't get money if you buy others...hehe.. but seriously i think canon is just playing it safe so they can blame you if something happens wich is rather unlikely...

I, myself have used rechargeable batteries with an A40 without any problems...i even let them in for some days...without leaking...or anything they were [email protected] of the brand hama ... i also did not use a canon charger but an intelligent quick charger by varta...

everything works very well with my batteries...and charger...

Unfortunately I can' tell .. as i was just checking the camera for a few days as it'll be a christmas present for someone... I used the batteries that were shipped with the camera first (which were Phillips, by the way - just doublechecked that)... then i bought the batteries and the charger to accompany my present...i checked them and took about 20 pics...let them in the cam for about 3 days took some 40 pics...when i took the pictures the camera remained on a lot inbetween shooting...i also took a few videos..and watched stuff on the display a lot...then i was done with my testing... didn't check for how much pictures the batteries were capable of as it didn't matter for me...there were no batteries with more power available...

would check it for you but unfortunately the camera is already wrapped up in christmas papers.

also i think it depends a good deal on how you shoot...you know display on/off? Flash on/off...time between the shots...stuff like that...

if you are still interested, let me know and i'll check that after christmas

I've been using Rayovac AA NiMH batteries in my cam for over a week now with no problems. They last a very long time too. I'm very happy with the results.
