717 or G3: A PERSONAL "quantitative survey”

Congatulations Yang!
many thanks!
It'll take you 8-10 good "sessions" with your
new 717 to realize how good this camera is!
too later for me: I was told my F717 will not be delivered until Friday, and I'm traving to Cyprus on Sunday.
I did try all of them:
Oly, Canon, Minoltas, and the best(my personal)feeling I've got
with my 707. I would definetely sacrifice at some point maybe
noisier images, with the rest what 717 can accomplish
instead...Lucky shootings Yang!
At the moment, I can think of two major difficulties with my new F717 with regard to my Canon G-series background:

1. Noisy and pixel-like parts of photos taken in low light condition

2. getting consistent explosure by using external flash without TTL

I think, in cause of time, I'll learn tricks from you experienced F717 users in dealing with these "enemies":-)

It is pity you won't have your 717 with you...After while you'll adopt your eye for the EVF(wich is really good),and start using "Manual" mode most of the times. The jog dial is going to be your main tool: it is one of the coolest and ergonomicaly almost perfect features of 717, not to mention live histogram and zoom ring. You will realize it once you get used to...And again, after all you are a wise and experienced photographer, the flash and the noise will become maybe 4 th or 5 th issues for you when your 717 pictures start "to sound", as it was with your G1/G2. I'm glad for you again!

why, most possibally I'll get my F717 on Friday, but have only one day to get used to it before leaving on Sunday.
After while you'll
adopt your eye for the EVF(wich is really good),
I've just seen a much better EVF on Fuji602z. It's 20% larger, 20% higher resolution, and above all, without the odd low frame rate of Sony's EVF in case of low shutter speed (very strange, considering the "good old time" of optical viewfinder on SLR camera).
and start using
"Manual" mode most of the times.
that's as useful as G3's manual mode. But, if I remember rightly, F717 shows the difference ito its exposure metering live, during the G3 dioesn't show the it until the user half-presses the release.
The jog dial is going to be your
main tool: it is one of the coolest and ergonomicaly almost perfect
features of 717,
that's true. It's much better built than that loose plastic dial wheel on the G3.
not to mention live histogram
but, while showing histogram, there's no distance display any more. Checking the actual distance metering is more important for me than histogram.
and zoom ring. You
will realize it once you get used to...
At the moment, I'm getting very confused while switching between manual focus mode (e.g. for checking the distance) and AF with regard to using the zoom ring. I guess I must stick in using zoom button at the beginning.

cheers,

You can see the LCD and access the buttons very well pointing up to
45 degree, providing you are on your knee. the 717 swivel about 80%
up. even pointing at 90 degree up you can still access all the
buttons easily, but you cannot see the LCD well without going down
and peeking.
So, it's the same as any other DC without swivel body. I just wanted to say, in this case, the swivel body has no advantage any more, during the swivel LCD turns out as being more flexible.
If I may ask, what are you shooting with the camera on the ground
and pointing up vertically? I really do not have any idea except
shooting the ceiling or standing people staring down. But why on
the ground?
not, I was not shooting ceiling:-), but from the view of a little kid:

Yang, I'm agree Fuji's EVF a bit bigger, But I woudn't say it's better by number of pixels, and the other thing is Sonys AF preview. It's a bit odd, but it still helps. Even if you block your flash and use AF in dark places, 7X7 makes EVF brighter when focusing, and that is nice, you have 1-1.5 sec time frame, so you can check your composition, while camera using HAF feature focusing on an object. At the beginning it looks too short, but after it's very helpfull. The other thing is: you can disable you live histogram feature, and have your metering scale. I did own Toshiba M70 long time ago, and (that 3 mp camera has live histogram feature as well ..WOW) I barely used it after I learned everything about my camera, I knew it "unconsciously", but for portraits sometimes it is really helpfull though. And "YES" in 7X7 "manual mode" when you change your aperture and exposure settins you see how your EVF changes the brightness and in a while you won't need histogram, you'll do it automatically!
