Well, users of compact flash-based cameras will soon have a 3Gb option. Meanwhile...well, do I even need to say it?

Between the Memory Stick size issue, my ongoing DSC-P1 battery issues, and the bugs with the 707 and 717 at introduction, I've about had it.

The Canon G3 looks like a nice little camera.

CF 3 GB will cost $2000 or more
30GB digital wallet costs about 300$ (not sure)
Choice is Yours.
Over.

BTW. If I look at G3 I see cheap plastic P&S compact thing. But I'am sure it can take superb photos.

Also the G3 can only handle up to 1.5 GB. THe 3 GB CF card needs a camera that supports FAT 32 and I believe only a DSLR or 2 supports it.

My feeling is that you wouldn't want a roll of film that has 1000 exposures on it, why would yoyu want to put all your eggs in one basket, err memorystick.

1.5Gb is still an order of magnitude more than 128Mb.

How many hard drives do you have in your computer? Would you rather have 8-10Gb drives or 1-80Gb drive, or better yet, A CHOICE between the two?

Besides, having multiple sticks: 1. Increases the likihood of losing one; and 2. Increases the odds of a storage failure (10x0.1%=1%).

And the P-Series is different how? In a lot of ways a rugged, impact-resistant plastic case protects better than a rigid, thin, aluminum case. My buddy with a G2 shot for three days last weekend in freezing temps without changing storage or rechanging the battery. Meanwhile, I got about ten shots each day before the battery went TU. And the battery is six months old. I also nearly lost another Memory Stick when I dropped it without noticing. I use the P1 for mountaineering pictures. It's a risk to change Memory Sticks when a dropped item falls hundred or thousands of feet- I can't always just bend over and pick it up.

All I'm saying is that I'm tired of buggy firmware that isn't user-flashable, a unique lack of choice in storage media sizes, and expensive, hyper-sensitive batteries. Would I buy a 3Gb Memory Stick? No. But I would buy a 512Mb stick.

I agree, Sony should provide a 512 stick for 100.00 I'd buy a couple

You answer Yourself:
If I only can choose I prefer 8x10GB because:
1. It's faster (separate controllers)
2. It's safer (if one drive fails I have still 90GB)

BTW. G3 can use FAT32

Everybody want to buy larger mem sticks, but I am sure when they will appear, most of people will say: "256MB for 200$ - no, better to buy 2x 128MB for 2x80$ etc. etc."

If I know Sony, prices of new MS won't be diferent...

Lets face it. The lack of more that 128MB memory sticks must continue to be a GREAT embarassement to Sony.

This has been the one down note on an outstanding series of cameras from Sony. They develop a unique proprietary memory product, with a schedule for memory growth and it falls way, way behind just about every other offering.

As to whether users need a larger memory stick. Well, users should have a choice.

I share the "all the eggs in one basket" thoughts. However, this is balanced by recognizing that the more you change memory sticks the more chance to lose or drop a stick. I suspect my chance of causing the problem is greater than that of a memory stick failing.

It would seem that more frequent removals and insertations would cause more wear and tear on the insertion mechanism for the sticks.

Also there are times when having to change memory means that pictures will be missed. This unfortunately has already happened to me at performance venues. So the pictures were lost without a stick failure.

Finally, for those of us who also on occassion take movies with our cameras the larger sticks would be a real advantage.

Hopefully, we will learn shortly where Sony stands - be it either failure of success. Perhaps we will finally see a larger stick from Sony, or at least hear a comment on their new memory stick schedule.

Two or more memory stick slots in new products ... probably would be a bad sign. :-)

The best.

The 2 and 3gig cards will only fit the high end DSLR units in the CF memory format. When you bought you camera, you know it used sticks. The larger cards will come out one day but untill then, why not enjoy the 128mb size. Even when Sony does comeout with the 1 gig sticks, it will cost as much as the camera!

The comparision is flawed: Presumably you have your important data off-loaded onto some form of backup medium. THe hard drive fails, you can always reinstall your programs, etc. Lose your 1000 pictures on your just failed 1.5 Gb CF card, you're screwed.

Give your consumers some choice. I've seen the memory stick ads where people record some audio onto a MS that they found in a bottle, then put it back in a bottle and throw it out to sea for another musician to find.

For any audio people out there...you all know how quickly 128MB disappears! That's about 5 or 6 minutes of stereo audio. Dream on, Sony!

If MS is going to be a standard, you have to pull consumers to use it because it's superior, not for any other reason.

Why don't you just buy Canon and get it over with? You've been slamming Sony left and right, now it's time to put yer money where yer mouth is....either get on the bus or get off...
