Hi,

I've been playing around in Lightroom, and would like some advice on which process looks best. Please feel free to be as critical as necessary - I want to learn.

Which of the following do you like best, and why? (If none, please feel free to say.)

1:

2:

3:

4:

Thanks!

I like the last one it shows more detail in the shadow areas, the first is ok too just a tad dark

No 1 by far. Exposure and colors are at their best, and it doesn't look overprocessed.

Number 1. The changes in the others, do nothing to improve the image or to give it any artistic value. Not sure what you are trying to achieve, but if you would enlighten us, perhaps we could offer examples or suggestions for getting the effect you are seeking.

Awesome - thanks all.

My favourite was number 1. It's not the original - for some reason in the original the driver's face is incredibly red.

The other 3 were just a couple of supposedly 'gritty' looks I downloaded, but they didn't work for me. I was wondering if I was missing something.

Number 1 still strikes me as a touch over saturated, though. Does anyone agree?

I've dropped the saturation a touch in 1b, any better?

I tried the previous action on another photo. I think it works better, but I'm still not convinced. However, I think the tones on the original are too purple, so it's not right either.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I prefer 1 to 1b. I played with it a bit. Increased sharpening on the car, and lightened the man standing in the bg.

I also played with your other beautiful image.

Cheers !

Hi;

While I generally agree that 1 or 4 are best in terms of light/shadows/color, etc. I think that the point about the man in the background is important, and I think he detracts from the photo, therefore I go for #3, OR EVEN BETTER, 1 or 4 with the man removed

I like it when a picture tells a story. When I first saw your pic I said to myself... The man in the bg is looking at the (old) car with envy... :-)
Thank you.

I'm never sure whether the background man adds or distracts. It seems you, like many, don't want him hidden.

The answer is: take all the answers with a grain of salt. Without knowing what the viewer's monitor looks like, and how they have it adjusted, any of the images can look best, and they can look a lot different than how they look on your monitor. An image one person says looks too dark may look fine on someone else's monitor.

So I won't answer your question, but I will address a couple of other comments in this thread. To me, the strength of the image isn't the car, it's the driver. That face has a lifetime of character, and the darker images lose that character, and it becomes just a picture of an old car.

I feel the same way about the man in the background. He's part of the character of the image, and losing him in the shadow detracts from the image.

Again, that's just my opinion. The person you really need to please is you.

The trouble is that the driver is in direct sun, and the standing man is hidden in the shadows. It's hard to bring him out without bowing out the car, or making the picture look unnatural.

Easier said than done. ;-)

Thanks for your opinion.

I think the person in the background is important to this scene, as asoftwind stated. After all this is Cuba and any person able to have a means of transportation probably is envied. I couldn't resist trying to include him in the scene. Attached is my attempt to do that.

  1. 4 , but don't be afraid to sharpen more
good contrast giving a feeling of depth and real colours : realism.
