Earlier this year my partner and I had to attend to family business in Scotland, so we turned it into a seven week around the world trip. Obviously time for a whole new kit :-), so I got a 60D, 15-85, and 70-300L. Several people said they were interested in seeing more of the shots, so here are my top favourites in chronological order from the 420-odd photos that made the final cut. It turns out that most of the best shots are of captive and wild birds and animals (a new long lens will tend to turn you in that direction).

First stop Singapore, and the fantastic Jurong Bird Park.

Then the wonderful Singapore Zoo.

A few days in London.

Visited a friend in Brighton.

Glasgow.

Fife.

The Isle of May - OMG, what a fabulous place for a bird photographer! I just wish I'd had more time to get to grips with the new gear before I got there.

The Isle of Islay ("eye-la").

Passing through London again.

Nothing from Vancouver Island made it into this set.

Hawaii.

North Island of New Zealand.

And back home to Western Australia. Thanks for looking. :-)

LOL, I love it! Any excuse to turn a trip into a round the world extravaganza with new gear!!

I've been to Singapore a few times but never quite made it here, must go there next time! great bird shots but I've never seen this type of pigeon before - not your average rat of the sky!
wow this eye is something else, what a knowing look
oh this is just too cute!
no trip to the UK is complete with getting mugged by a squirrel!
Puffins!! I'd love to go and see these guys one day, so gorgeous - was this from boat or land?

The Isle of Islay ("eye-la").
OK I love the hairy coo and the fuzzy antlered deer, but where are the shots of Laphroaig?? Ardbeg?? Lagavulin??? Tell me you went to one distillery at least??
Otters are another favourite of mine. Sweet shot - shame the one in the background has a cropped head.

Nothing from Vancouver Island made it into this set.
really? I loved it there, so beautiful.

Wow fabulous goose!
this one is really sweet too!

And back home to Western Australia. Thanks for looking. :-)
Welcome home! Thanks for sharing those - it was lovely to see some of your trip. I really should get back to PP'ing all my holiday shots, I have a shameful backlog!

Cheers Olivia

The world is too big for one lifetime, and one lens.

Great series, but only 420 top pics around the world ? :-) How was the total ?
Btw, how do you like the 70-300L ? A big difference to common 70-300 ?

Normally a post of 33 holiday photos would really turn me off - but not these! Excellent series! Especially the birds! You make a common sparrow look good!

Thanks for sharing!

When you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!

See the 'Plan' in my 'Profile' for my current equipment.

What a great holiday! Lovely collection!

How do you like that 70-300L lens?

That's called, "Thinking Like A Photographer". :-)

A big tax refund helped a lot.

You must go there! There are fantastic birds like that everywhere you look.

This photo really showed me what the 18MP sensors can do. It's a crop of about 40% of the width of the frame, but the detail and clarity is as good as I ever got with the full resolution of the 450D.
oh this is just too cute!
Doncha love mumma's big lips in the background? :-)
Puffins!! I'd love to go and see these guys one day, so gorgeous - was this from boat or land?
We went on the very first boat trip of the season, from Anstruther ("ainster") in Fife. You only get to spend about two hours on the island - I wish I had two days. This shot is from the cliffs on the west side.
The Isle of Islay ("eye-la").
OK I love the hairy coo and the fuzzy antlered deer, but where are the shots of Laphroaig?? Ardbeg?? Lagavulin??? Tell me you went to one distillery at least??
Less than not interested. :-)

I invited Josha to come with me, but it was just as impractical for him to come over as it was for me to meet him in The Netherlands. Maybe if he had come he might have talked me into it.
Otters are another favourite of mine. Sweet shot - shame the one in the background has a cropped head.
That would have made it a different shot. :-)

True, I just didn't get any "wow" shots there. I got some of a wild bear I s'pose I could post.
Wow fabulous goose!
Thanks. :-)

Thanks. Of all my top favourites it's the most recent. :-)

Goodonya, thanks a bunch. Yeah, it's a big job, but someone's gotta do it!

Thanks very much. I brought home 1,070 shots, which was as much as I could cull with the netbook I bought for the trip (see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1031&message=38348001 ).

I love it! It's the lens I want to go shooting with. I don't have a lot to compare it with (I have the 55-250, I've hired the 400/5.6, and I've handled the 100-400), but I've not used the 70-300 non-L. Basically, it seems to be as good optically as anything like the 70-200/4s and the 100-400, in a compact package that's effortless to carry all day on a BlackRapid strap. It's sharp wide-open and the bokeh is lovely (as you can see from these shots :-)), good focussing, great IS... just what you want from an L.

Yeah, see my reply to guinness2. I'm working towards my ultimate lens collection - 70-300L, 15-85, 100/2.8L IS, and a 400/5.6 IS when they get around to it. I think the first two make a great travel combination if you like zoos and wildlife but don't want to lug a 100-400. I also took a Kenko 1.4 TC (the Isle of May shot are with that), and it's useful if you know how to get the best out of it.

Aha! So my eyes were not seeing things as I went through your wonderful photos, there were few ones with focal length 420mm and I was wondering why...

It seems that 70-300L is worth every penny, the photos are razor sharp, even with TC. I've been planning to get the 70-200L f/4 IS, but now you're turning my head towards this new gem... :)

Excellent set, nice colours and subjects, it was fun see those shots, thanks for sharing!

:-) Yeah, the Kenko reports the 1.4x focal length.

It seems many people are getting that idea. If the constant f/4 isn't a high priority, I don't see how you could go wrong with that.
