Amazon is selling this Viking 512 MB Compact Flash card for $131.44 after $50.00 rebate. Not a bad price and a good size for a G3. Has anyone had any experience with this CF card? Good or bad? I have two each Viking 256 MB Compact Flash cards and they have worked well for me in 3 different cameras. Comments?

Mostly good experiences. However I have had a couple shots appear as corrupted files (unreadable).

I bought one of these couple months ago. Sent in the rebate couple days after I received the card. I have never heard from the rebate center since. I check the "wheresmyrebate.com" center and apparently they claimed that they have never received my rebate. Not sure what I have to do now to get my $50 back. All the original papers are gone. All I have left are the copies. Needless to say, I will never fall for one of these rebates again. It's such a hassel!!!

You can pickup one of these units for less than $200 and you can store thousands of photos while you're in the field. No need to worry about running out of memory cards. All you need is one or two 256 CF and a 20gig image tank!

Where did you find an 20-GB Image Tank for less than $200?

Hi Gus,

I have been using Viking CF cards for over two years now without any glitches. I have also have no problems in the past with their rebate program and as a matter of fact, I just purchased another 512 from Amazon as well.

This rebate takes approximately six to eight weeks to process, according to their own information, right?

Rebates do work. I've never had one fail yet. They rarely come in within under a month. See if it takes a bit more time, or if there is some other source you can call to find out what the holdup is. As long as your money is coming, there's no hassle at all.

Ulysses,

thanks for the advice. I know that it would take 6-8 weeks to process the rebate. What I am concern with is the fact that the rebate center has no record of the information I sent in. In the past, when I purchased a CF from Dell and Dell uses the same company (wheresmyrebate.com) to process their rebate offers, after 3 weeks of sending in my rebate paperwork, wheresmyrebate.com would have my information show up on their website. This time around (5 weeks already) nothing is on that site. Anyway, I will try to give them a call again next week.

I really hope something turns up for you here. I'm considering this same CF card from Viking. I definitely want the rebate if it can be had. :-))

Otherwise, I'm going to go with a Transcend for as low as I can get it.

I'll go with this reply. Thanks to all of you for your input.

I got a Viking 128MB earlier this year and got the rebate at that time (~$20-$25).

In Sept I purchased 512MB Viking from Amazon. Submitted the paper...being real sure to include EXACTLY what they wanted. WHeresmyrebate.com says they received on Sept 25 & check was mailed on Dec. 5. A long time, but I expect any day.

As they say....knock wood....I have had no problem with rebates or with the Viking cards.

I agree Thang. I do not consider rebates as there is no accountability on these companies. I look hard for coupons on the net, and I use ebates.com (check it out).

Viking has a really bad reputation as far as rebates go. They basically cheated thousands of people out of rebates by refusing them for various made up reasons ayear ago. I recall at the end of last year they (Viking) promised to never offer any rebates again. They do offer them again and have been for the past 5-6 months I don't know if they have been paying this time around. I personally have done many rebates and will do many more. It's one way to get a better deal. I wouldn't do a Viking rebate however. In your case you should be able to send in a copy of everything and the rebate center should validate based on that. If they keep giving you problems read this http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=54&threadid=58957 and follow the advise.

Thanks for your advice. I will check them out. In the meantime, I am going with a 20gig external storage device. In terms of $ MB, it's MUCH cheaper. One 512 CF and one 256 CF are enough for my G1 and G3 (soon). I will just take the Image Tank with me when I am on the field.

there are many more including people that have posted on this site. I was going to buy a CF card from them, but after doing little research decided against it. Note that in the last link "VikingGuy", who apperently works for them, has stated "no more mail in rebates after December 3rd, 2001".

Now where are the " hundreds/thousands of apparently satisfied customers who actually got their rebates" that you are talking about? Perhaps I will change my mind after reading some positive comments ;)

You make a good case against messing with Viking rebates. So, what's the next best price/performance 512 MB card? Amazon also sells Sandisk 512 MB cards, one for $239.88 and another for $259.99. That's a huge difference from the Viking price.

I'm more than a little distrustful of the comments on that board, though I do appreciate the links to them.

Be that as it may, my confidence meter has been knocked down on Viking, due to vk's posts here. I won't bother amassing my hundreds and thousands of names of satisfied Viking customers. :-)

I'll likely go with a Transcend card and just live happily ever after. :-)))

You can get one of those for $180 or less (512MB card).
