hello freinds...

i am going to buy nikon d5100. I have few options... please suggest which is best for me. Let me tell you i am totally new to photography, just learnt some basic themes about dslr in last few months. i take interest in photography of landscape, macro and some time to shoot sports activity, birds flying. I have following options :
(1) dslr body (d5100) with kit lens (18-55mm) for about 800$
(2)dslr body + 18-105mm lens (not 18-55) for about 1066$ or
(3) dslr kit (body + 18-55) for 800& + 55-200mm lens for 267$

please suggest which option would be most suitable for me.
Thanking you in advance.

3 - you should have some fun with that - and get some close-up rings for it too. Besides the body being far better than the glass, I'd also suggest saving up for a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8.

I definitely suggest option 1.

Get the camera and use it for awhile. When you figure out what your camera cannot do, that you want it to do, then you will know what you need to shop for.

thank you there..

i am really keen to know..what is 35mm lens used for? portrait or landscape? can't we use zoom lens 18-55 mm for the same?

You can, and for many purposes the 18-55 will be just about as good.

The 35mm f/1.8 lens has several advantages:

It's sharper, it has better color (contrast), it is smaller, it can work in lower light, and it can de-focus the out of focus areas more.

All of those are good reasons to have one, but only if you use 35mm a lot. Many people do, but many people do not. I have no 35mm lens, and I don't miss it. But I use a 24mm lens frequently, and I'm tempted by a 105. It just depends on what appeals to you and your sense of photography.

Conventional wisdom says that for most people, after using their standard kit lens for some period of time, will find that they have taken 90% of their images at either 18 or 55, and few in between. At that point in time, you will know if you are constantly struggling to get more into the frame (need a wider lens), wishing you could zoom in more, wishing your lens worked better in low light, wish you had a good flash, a good tripod, or maybe something entirely different.
