I occasionally have a flare problem with my DCS760. I don't see it in the viewfinder but it appears on the image. I was told this is caused by the IR filter in the camera. My question is, if I remove the filter and put a Tiffen Hot Mirror in front of my lens will it cure the problem?

There were a number of DCS 760 IR filters that caused flare problems. Kodak will repair or replace them ... at least they would about a year ago when I was having the problem. I did use my camera with a Hot Mirror in front of the lens until I received the new filter from Kodak ... and yes it solved the problem.

Thats interesting on the 760 issue and Kodak replaceing them. I just got a 660 and it has the same problem with flare, however the I/R filter is new purchased sep from the original camera.

I am going to move to the hot mirror also, tiffen and see what happens.

ITs my understanding that the part number for the I/R filter for the 660 and 760 were the same.

But it sure will flare.

I had the IR filter replaced in July by Kodak with the "new and improved". It helped a little but not enough. What you see in the viewfinder should be what you get. Isn't that the advantage of an SLR camera? I have aDCS14N on order and if that does the same thing Kodak will get it back quick.

Hi Bob,
Like you I am patiently acutally not so patiently, waiting on a 14n also.

The design of the 14n and sensor, from what I have seen, Kodak has no AA filter and the I/R is down right on top of the CCD built into the cover glass.

I ordered some Hot Mirrors today.

Its also interesting to note that there have been several people who claim that they can shoot the 760 without any I/R filter outdoors, I haven't tried it but they also claim you get better contrast and a even sharper image.

Once I get the hot mirrors, I will then shoot some with them on and then off to test for my self.

I am betting that my I/R is one of the improved as the I/R for the 760 and 660 are the same and the I/R I have is new one from Imaging Spectrum. Like you mentioned it cuts down on the flare, but its still there and not in the viewfinder. In my shooting I have found that I can cut it out almost totally by just remembering to add some shielding for the sun when I am shooting into it or around it. Seems to work OK, but you do have to remember.

Just curious, do other digital cameras have this flare problem or only the Kodak? Also, does anyone know if it is supposed to be improved on the 14N?
