Hi all, I'm trying to decide between Manfrotto 190xprob and 055xprob. I know the differences, but just wondering if anybody have tried both of them and if it does make a big difference when carrying one around. I can get a kit with 498RC2 from B&H photo. it has about $50 difference between the two.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

055xprob

the 190xpro i think would be too light and too short. It vibrates a lot more too.

I have and use the 190 xprob and find it neither light or short,??

I have the 190. A friend has the 055. I have used both and carried both. My friend is taller than I am and has back issues so I suspect the 190 might be too short for him but it works fine for me at 5'7" with my D70. There is a difference in weight but in the short term when you factor in all of the other equipment you are probably lugging around, not sure it should be the decision point. having used both I cannot agree with the suggestion that the 190 is meaningfully less stable or less effective to dealing with shudder caused by shooting conditions. as long as the height is sufficient for you shooting style, the 190 should work just fine and with the bonus of being a bit lighter. if you really want to minimize shudder, then you have to go carbon fiber or step up to a higher grade of tripod.

Here's another variation on the theme, along with some weights and measures.

The heaviest setup I use is an Olympus E-1 with a 50-200SWD + EC14, which weighs in at 3 lbs. 4 oz. total.

I ended up choosing a Manfrotto 190cxpro4 with a 496RC2 head. The tripod is load-rated @ 11 lbs. 0 oz. and the head @ 13 lbs. 0 oz., both well beyond the weight of the camera setup above. Total weight for the tripod and head is 3 lbs. 15 oz..

That gives me 7 lbs. 3 oz. all up.

It was a bunch of money to spend, so why this particular conformation? Most of my photography is wildlife/birds/landscapes, and I walk the territory that I'm shooting in. Every ounce of extra weight will kick your butt at the end of a long day, not to speak of the other gear I carry (binocs, water, another lense or two). The tripod is plenty stiff and stable, and the 90 degree swivel of the central post can't be beat for macro. I chose the 4 piece leg option to save a couple inches in length when the tripod is closed up - it straps nicely to the daypack that way - and also because I think the 4 piece legs are stiffer than the 3 piece when fully extended.

But heavier is generally a lot less expensive than lighter. So, "you pays your money and you takes your choice", as the old saying goes.

When it comes to tripods, the whole purpose is to keep a camera steady. They have no other use at all! So, with that in mind, the advice is always to get the best, strongest and heaviest that your wallet and strength can allow.

Of course, as has been pointed out, any extra weight will be noticed if you travel distances on foot, so you need to bear it in mind, but my advice is to go for the one that most closely matches the advice - 055xProB

I have one and regularly carry it all day and am never disappointed. Tired, yes, but not unhappy!

I have and use both. My 190 is carbon fiber and the 055 is not so it is much heavier. I prefer the 055 if I have no concerns about its weight. I'm hiking or otherwise concerned about weight and then I use the 190. I have not had any issue with vibration or other stability problems with the 190 so in my experience that is not an issue.

I also have the 498 head and for the most part I found it acceptable, but I have recently upgraded to a RSS BH40 which is far better overall.

If you have any concerns at all about weight then go with the 190. But either should serve you well and are good values.

I have both, and got the 055 ProB first because it was the correct size for me without having to raise the centre column. Weight isn't usually a problem because I only use it to go and do a certain task, and don't generally carry it around all day. I got the 190 ProB because I wanted a quality tripod to take on holiday, and the 055 was too big to go in my case, and it was good to have a tripod slightly lighter too. I don't carry it around all day on holiday, but usually do night scenes which may mean carrying around for 3-4 hours. Light weight is good. ;-)

I use a ball head as well, which I swap between tripods. If I could only have one, it would be the 190 as it is more versatile and lighter.

I tried both and prefer the 055CX, which is a very solid and simple design without the gimmick swivel thing I would probably never use anyway. I think it is lighter than the Pro as well.

Best regards,
Jon

Check the Adorama prices on the two.

My sentiments exactly, ......and the less you use any center column, the better.....

to the OP - If you have to raise the center column on the 190 to see the viewfinder, get the 055.........

The 055xprob is much too tall at its default.. but it's a tradeoff for better vibration control and weight.

When they are standing up straight, chances are you can't tell the difference between the two.

But when you start using that tilting center post in many different positions . . . then you will see why many here tell you to get the 055!

For the extra $20 . . . get the 055!

It really is that much sturdier!
