I have been using Pentax for some years now [K200D]. I have considered the K5, however reading this forum and the current pricing and lack of variety and quality in AF lenses, I'm going to follow the majority and move over to Canon or maybe [doubt it] Nikon.

I read somewhere that Pentax should release a White Paper re Lenses releases. How about just releasing a competitor for the 5D/D700 and some modem AF f1.4/2 primes and some f2.8 zooms...

I just came from Canon after using Canon gear for almost 10 years.. no regrets. I've had an issue with the mirror-overrun but expect the camera back soon. I prefer it to the Canon gear on a number of levels. The K5 is a very good camera.. and dumped my 5D MKII for it.

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear used to capture it.

The deal with Ricoh doesn't close until October. Hoya won't, and Ricoh can't, do anything until then. There never has been any indication by Pentax that a FF camera is forthcoming. Check back in a couple of years to see what direction Ricoh took with Pentax products.

You've never thought that maybe you are the limiting factor?
I know I am.

Oh, it's another of these pointless "I'm leaving" posts...

Yes and then Pentax should stop producing Limited primes, manufacture larger, heavier bodies than necessary with worse ergonomics and change their name to Canon or errrrm Nikon...genius!

Goodbye.

Yawn.

The DA* 16-50 f2.8, DA* 50-135 f/2.8, DA* 55 f/1.4, FA 31 f/1.8 limited, FA 43 1.9 limited, FA 50 f/1.4, and FA 77 f/1.8 are all either f/2.8 zooms or f/2 or faster primes. Also what canc ompare to pentax's limited lenses on canon? Plus the k-5 high iso abilities can surely make up for the loss in speed in the lenses.

Ed,

Let's say Pentax will release 3 prime lenses at 1.4 for 2000$ a pop. If you'll not going to buy them what is the point of this post? If you'll buy you may end up divorced. Where is your benefit?

Pentax has 3 ways to go: down, survive or thrive. None should be our concern. This and all photographic companies are in business to make money from our perverted attachment to a brand and our pavlovian response to new products. Time for us to change, enjoy life and take kids for pizza (take photos too). Stop whining

perhaps a tad high :)
and lack of variety
I think (here) you mean "not enough" long(er) 2.8 zooms ;)
and quality in AF lenses,
from a retailers POV, I think you would find the grass on the other side is going
to be the same shade of green :D

I would say there has been more moves to Nikon than to Canon and, if memory serves, quite a number to the D700 :o

I think White Papers are, usually, governmental and generally costs lots of money

and the results rarely live up to their expectations ........ kind of like most things these days :D.

Cheers and hope the grass ends up being greener in your new pasture :)

Hi Ron,

That was a tad ' curt ', don't you think? I mean, really, Ed's only made one(1)

post and you're already writing him off :O You should really give him the benefit
of the doubt and, at least, a few posts and perhaps some bad rodent pics or,
at least, a few bad self-protrait shots ;)

Cheers,

Jack

I've always had dual brand systems ever since I got into digital photography back in 2004. I've always had Canon DSLRs right alongside my Pentax DSLRs.

My current Canon DSLR is the 50D. It's a fine camera but I almost always find myself grabbing the K-5 instead. I've also used both cameras simultaneously on photo projects and when I weed out the rejected photos I usually have more Pentax keepers than Canon keepers. It was the same between 50D and K-7 or the 40D and K20D, or the 20D and K10D.

I've never understood this so-called lack of lens choices for Pentax. Granted, Canon and Nikon do have larger collection of lenses but I've never had any problem finding Pentax mount lenses in any focal length I want or need. Sigma and Tamron make some excellent quality lenses that supplement and rival anything Pentax, Canon, or Nikon makes.

My point is you'll get great photos with Canon but the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side of the fence.

I guess switching to canon is your safe bet for now because it is not clear what direction ricoh will bring pentax into for now. If in the future ricoh make good camera and lenses that you need and can afford, you can switch back to pentax.

Thats definitely true, all system has particular weaknesses and strength, you have to just study them and cope with them. Thera are few thing everyone must know using Canon, most lenses are not optimized for super high resolution APS-C sensors, there are few good APS-C lenses only from canon and no L series. Some L-s are very weak on APS-C in most apertures.

Pentax lenses are genrally sharp but lack internal AF motor mostly, DA* and some DA-s have it but it is slow. From the other hand limited pancake lenses with screw drive and very light optics provide stabilized shooting with ultrafast AF.

Pentax provides very high DR compared to Canon, even 5D2 is far behind, you can take dark image and turn it to usable large print. This is 14 stops of DR and this feature is most I like in K5.

Canon flash system is better and there are much more options available.

And so on on on on on on on on ..............

Happy shooting with all systems, I like the competitive world, it is now much better than 5 years ago, we have so many options to chose from.

I read the post for fun and never respond. But hey your right. I really don't care what brand of camera he/she shoots with; as long as they enjoy it, great! My older brother shoots Canons do I care? Nope I don't, becuase he is happy with his gear.

I agree you pretty much can't lose with any dSLR.

Yamin, why would changing to Canon be a safe bet? Do you honestly think Ricoh are going to buy the Pentax camera brand to do what exactly?

Shut it down???

I don't think so!! Ricoh are a very large company and will invest and promote the Pentax brand. Something Hoya was not very interested in.

It's about time some posters wised up to the fact that Ricoh have bought the camera part of Pentax to promote, invest and grow it.

Thank goodness for Ricoh!!
