Hands down, what is the best Fuji camera one can purchase for around $500? Quality, clarity, size, weight, versatility, features, etc: best overall for the money?

Thanks.

merkury,

Without a doubt that would be the S602Z, It is available for a little bit over $500 at buydig.com ($524) but it is well worth that. In my opinion if you were looking at something in the $400 range I would save the additional $100 and get the S602Z, you cant beat it at that price.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. However, you may be able to find a 6900, which is almost as good as the 602, for something less than $500.

The best though would be an S1 Pro at a DEEP discount! :) But that will never happen, or if it does, I do NOT want to know about it! LOL

Don't forget to factor in memory costs to your camera budget.

the 8-16mb cards that usually come with digital cameras are like getting a 12 pic roll of film with a standard camera- you're gonna be buying more in a hurry.

Hi merkury,

I think the F601 is the best overall value for money. It is now less than $400 and has all the mainly used features that the S602 has but fits in a shirt pocket, so is likely to be with you at the "magic moment". As far as images are concerned I posted in the summer comparisons showing its images to be virtually indistinguishable from a 602. It does not have external flash, nor video @ 30fps but its 15 fps is great, nor does it have a 6x zoom (IMO the main reason for having a 602 but it can easily be used with a telescope).

Both are great cameras so it comes down to what sort of camera you want and how much to pay.

If you want a truley wonderful digital camera, find a few extra bucks and get the S602. If not, try the Canon Digital Elph, I love mine, takes great pics, fits in my pants pocket, very nice. I have both because I have diferent needs at different times, my Canon is my everyday camera, goes with me wherever I go, the Fuji is my special events and portrait work camera.

If I can only afford one camera and I already had a good film SLR then I would get a Canon Digital Elph (Ixus in some countries). If I didn't have a good film SLR and could only afford one camera I would get the S602 and keep a disposable camera in my car for emergencies.

Don't worry about the price of memory as one person suggested. I got a 128MB Smartmedia card at Staples last week for $27.99. If you shoot 3mp mode in it's highest quality setting, you'll get 100 pictures or about 4 rolls of film's worth, more than most people care about. If you shoot 3mp in normal mode you'll get twice as many pics.

R Leonard...just go to eBay and type in "Compact Flash" or whatever memory product you use and watch how cheap most end up costing (exception IBM 1Gig Microdrive). I just picked up a 128 CF @ 25x for less than $25!

I know your question was what was the best Fuji camera for around $500.

Don't get caught up in price. If it's point and shoot simplicity you want get the 2600. If you want point and shoot simplicity with 6x zoom, get the Fuji 2800. Otherwise, I agree with most all on the 602.

Current USA pricing on the 2600 is 199.97 at Wal-Mart, 2800 at BuyDig.com at $267 last time I looked (about a week ago).

2800 is 2megapixel with smartmedia, 3800 is sd card with 3+ megapixel and some advanced exposure setting features. Plus 3800 has pop up flash. The zoom control on 3800 is more ergonomically designed.

If I was to lose my 602 and could not afford to replace it, I would seriously consider Richard’s suggestion of the 601. Other than the functional differences that Richard has already pointed out, I feel one would be nit-picking to find differences in image detail. It’s that good.

I agree that the image quality of 601 is very close to 602, given that the conditions are the same. But in more difficuit lighting conditions, no doubt the 602 has more control over 602 (like 15s vs 3s exposure). Also, the menu system in 601 can sometimes be annoying even for the simplest photographic control like switching over A,S,P,M.

If I cannot afford a 602, I would also satisfied with 601 if a emphasize on movie a lot. But if I do not care about movie, I would absolutely go for a Canon s30/s40 at similar price level.
