second "need help" photo

Joan:

All I did here was apply a dream action that I have and play with a lighting effect in PS. Mnonkey is might correct with the yellow tone. This can be adjusted out very quickly, I just did not take the time.
I guess at the end of the day it depends on the effect you are looking for...

I know it's oeverly done, and not very natural, but since people have found the black background a bit of a problem, how about getting rid of it!

I've switched to the red channel of the pic so that i could see more detail. and made a path around her and cut her off.

Did some levels adjustment to make the area around her left side come out a bit more. and did an light softening of the pic.

Here's another photo on which I'd sure appreciate help. Would
anyone want to take it and touch it up for me and show the
results--and say how you did it? TIA Joan

This may look light on PC monitors(I'm on a Mac)

It would be nice to have a hair light, in order to get seperation from the background and a little more depth. The background didn't look all that great when I simply lightened it.

Hi Joan. I'm going to go in a different direction here. Instead of lightening the picture to regain lost detail, I tried to turn this into a low key portrait.

Note: I've spend up to 3 hours editing an individual picture, but only when it was a one of a kind shot. I think you'd spend your time better analyzing why the shot doesn't please you, adjusting your set up, and taking it again. If this is a family member, I'm sure she'll be pleased to pose for you again.

Wow, if I don't learn something from all of these posts, I'm non teachable (if that's a word). Frank, I will certainly do as you suggested, and might even show the results on here! Also, think a small slave flash might be helpful to get better results the first time around. I really like the backlit effect. With women, it's easy to use the lasso tool to cut around them...or erase one layer...but with little kids with their hair pulled straight back it's hard to get it without it looking like a cut out.

Mackenzie will enjoy seeing what all of you have done with her photo. Thanks all. Joan
