What to Do with my D3s? Upgrade to a D4?

I was not joking, but I guess I shall keep it, currently have a Nikon 24-70 2.8ED & the Nikon 50mm 1.4G. Its an awesome Camera I must say.
Having looked at the history of recent Pro Nikon cameras such as the D2h/D2hs, D2x/D2xs, D3/D3s, D3/D3s, I am adopting the strategy of waiting for the facelift or 's' model to be released. The advantage is that you get the improvements/fixes over the initial model and do not pay the 'early adopter' price penalties.

Hence I am keeping my D3 until the D4s is out. As you have not really made much use of your D3s, you may want to do the same.

I believe I would just keep shooting the D3S.. then if you want a D4, just get it keep the D4 for a backup and keep shooting the D3S
I rest my case.

take the $5000 and get 100 point and shoots - give away to family and friends - make everyone happy....

Hmmm, a $5000 pro camera that's 5 months old and only has 950 actuations and the OP feels a need to come on here and ask if he should upgrade to something that is only a rumor... This forum never ceases to amaze me!

I would offload NOW.

I sold my D700 a month ago knowing this, and have been renting for shoots on the weekend...once the D4 is announced, you'll lose 30%

Quick check on FM buy/sell, a D3 was roughly $3500 used. A new D3 is about $5000. With 950 shots, that works out to about $2.00/shot. That's pretty expensive bragging rights :)

No reason to panic like that. No body will loose 30% over night just because of an announcement.

First, the announced stuff might be MONTHS away , plus the bodies are always way more expensive to start with. It could be one full year from now till the a D4 / D800 gets to the current price point of the current models. Meanwhile, the D3S and D700 will continue to be very attractive alternatives in the used market.

The worst depreciation, usually occurs "NOW" - since everybody are waiting for the new models announced.

Ask Ken Rockwell (sometimes, he makes a lot of sense): http://kenrockwell.com/tech/upgrades.htm

In a nutshell, Rockwell says: If you have to ask, then the answer is a clear NO

Very sensible advice. He uses this as his yardstick:

I once asked a wise old friend if I ought to marry a certain girl. I valued his input on something so important. He laughed, and said "If you have to ask, the answer is NO." He went on to explain that if she was the right girl , it would be so obvious that I wouldn't be asking anyone. Therefore, if the answer wasn't obvious, then she's not the right one, and the answer is unquestionably NO.

What's a D4? There's no such thing yet. How can you upgrade to a non-entity?

No. You should sell it now before the depreciation becomes much greater than it is already. Because you have used this camera very little, you are not going to miss it. After the D4 becomes available you can decide whether or not you want another top-of-the-line camera.

I will be happy to buy it off you if you give me a good discount. Oh, and my birthday is around the corner so you can gift it if you like :)

Why are most so uptight about the OP's question. Lenses are keepers but DSLR bodies are electronic gadgets which can change/advance dramatically with each new iteration. If he wants the latest and best then I say go for it. He can have second thoughts about the D3s knowing a D4 is around the corner. Not everyone needs a financial reason for change.

I predict the D4 will eclipse the D3s significantly and I'm looking forward to purchasing one too.

I purchased a D3s about 5 months ago, has 950 shutter actuations. Now that the D4 may be announce, Im debating if is should sell my D3s just to upgrade to a D4. An then again is it worth it to get more megapixels & a few new features on a D4 that my D3s doesn't have.
What specifically is wrong with the D3s that you expect will be corrected in the D4?

With less than a thousand shots in five months, there must be something drastically wrong with the design of the D3s, but something you first need to specifically define. Write down the deficiencies that keep you from using it, point by point, so it is clear in your mind.

Next define what levels of improvement would make it an acceptable camera for constant use. Then if the D4 addresses these specifics—or does not—the answer will be obvious when you total up the score of one against the other.

While doing so, take into consideration your own level of skill and knowledge, assessing your ability as a photographer and your ability to learn a deep and complex camera. If your eyes have glazed over before you have reached the middle of the manual, an even more advanced camera will just be more of a challenge.

The D4 may not even be comparable to the D3s. We don't really know anything yet. Why not wait and see?

So renting a camera on weekends is free? Most places I know will charge you at least $150 to rent a pro level camera for a weekend, not to mention the hassle of arranging for the rental, driving to pick it up, or paying shipping, etc. Doesn't take many weekend rentals to eat up the few hundred $$ you came out ahead.

Horses for courses I guess, just seems like strange logic...I'd rather just own my own camera :)

No brainer of course it is. Everyone here has to find an execuse or worst can't afford it. You don't have any of those problems, sell your D3s NOW, and get inline for the D4!

If for some reason you need the features in the D3s buy it back later it will be cheaper and have a lot more milage too, but you won't worry as you don't put much on them :D
