I know a lot of people are talking about the new Zeiss 24mm and all of that but ...

What about a 20mm 2.8 from SONY (same size as the 16mm) that avoid all the weird distortions present on the 16mm ?! Each time I see someone begging for new lenses, I only see 30, 50, 100 and so on ... They have the idea of the ZEISS for granted so ... no SONY at the wide end ? I'm looking for the ZEISS also but I would definitely buy a 20mm from SONY at the same 16mm price range. What about you ? I like the quality on my 16mm, not to speak about the portability ...

I agree for a 20mm 2.8 and even I agree with some people asking for something between 24 and 35mm, but I disagree with their lack of logic, and desire for a pancake lens like Samsung or m4/3 while asking for something cheap, max aperture around 1.8-2.8, and keeping everything sharp without considering the optical physics related to registration distance on NEX-series cameras and sensor size...

Why? If you want something like the 16F28, let's say, around 20 and 30, keeping the same size, then it will have a reduced max. aperture...will you be ok with that? (Remember that you said you'll buy something in the 16F28 price range) and even, it could be so hard to keep everything within acceptable margins for people here obsessed with sharpness. So if they want something to perform good on NEX-series cameras, Sony has to increase lens length. And then people will complain about the "huge" lens size. just following their childish desire for magical lenses that do everything they want while keeping lenses cheap and small.

Maybe with this thread, it will begin another campaign between people wanting pancakes and people sticking to reality and knows why something can be done, and why others no.

What aperture are you thinking ? 2.8 is the ideal. I could live with an extra 1 mm in lenght size ... :-)

The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 micro43 lens is a pancake, small, fast and sharp. So, yes, I think it could be done. It would be bigger than the Panasonic, but not huge like the Zeiss 24.

+1 for Sony 20mm f/2.8. Something that is less wide can provide better corner-to-corner sharpness. 20mm is ideal for me, but 24mm is also okay as its is very close to 38mm much like a point/shoot.
  • 20mm f/2.8
  • 50mm f/1.4
  • 85mm f/1.8
  • 100mm f/2.0
would fill out my sony e-mount wish list. I don't care for zoom on NEX. I think a big zoom lens defeat the entire purpose of having a portable iLC.

the 16mm lens is virtually distortion free

The lens is very good - there is always going to be people that have nothing to do but whine .....this does nto make the 16mm any less usable or nice.

the only problem with the 16mm is that extreme corners are quite soft. That is it - Soft extreme corners. NO distortions,

Aberrations are noticeable but can be corrected in software easily.

No distortions - softness in the corners and aberrations yes.

Is the lens great and usable - yes.

Does it take very cool pictures - depends on your skill

and expensive too - Price: $379.00

NEX is slightly bigger sensor and slightly smaller flange distance so same design as the Panasonic but scale to E-mount will look nothing like the 16mm or the panasonic 20mm - it will be significantly bigger and lengthier lens.

I'm not whining about the 16 mm. I like the lens. But ... does it have distortions ? Yes. I don't need a stupid graphic to tell what I'm seeing ... I have eyes.
Cheers
