X100/RAF and Lightroom is a BIG disappointment

If you set DR to 100%, then with default parameters the LR interpretation of the .raf file is quite close to the X100 jpeg in Provia/Std film mode.

The other modes, Astia and Velvia, are quite nice depending on the subject, and I found not so easy to reproduce them from the .raf in LR.

In the end I believe that I will give up with raw files, and shoot jpegs out of the box... I am considering setting the sharpening setting of the camera to the minimal value, so that I have more latitude to tune it on the jpeg afterwards.

Returning home from holidays with my X100 purchased the day I left I was looking forward to upload some 1000 RAF files into Lightroom. ...

It turned out to be one big disappointment. LR does not recognise the camera settings and just translates the RAW on its own...
that's a just punishment for bringing home "some 1000 files" a day. buy a video-cam!
PS the 20 mb X100 RAF files are filling up HDD space pretty fast and processing is not realy on the fly...
huh? it's just a 12 mp sensor, like 1000s other on the market...

In the end I believe that I will give up with raw files, and shoot jpegs out of the box...
good idea: jpg will give you 256 shades of color, RAF 16.000. which is nearly the same. in some people's eyes. mostly in blind people's eyes.

I am wondering how you set the dynamic range parameter in your X100.

If I understand things correctly, if you set the dynamic range above 100, what it does is underexposes by the appropriate number of stops. Perhaps Lightroom isn't picking this information up properly.

I'd suggest setting DR to 100 if it's not already set there and seeing if you get similar results in Lightroom and Fuji JPEG files. If so, then it might be as simple as applying an appropriate exposure compensation in Lightroom.

well it was actually 1600 pictures during 4 weeks of holliday including the coverage of two family parties,; chopped down to 1000 files by initial review on lcd X100 and on laptop preview in a 4 weeks period for a new camera like the X100... 1000 in a day? with a X100?

I had forgotten that detail - so long since I'd even considered raw vs jpeg and chosen to shoot exclusively raw. Perhaps I'll use that raw button more often.

Cheers

I have multiple external HDD's in place... I keep 1 copy on the PC (this is were I store the copies Lightroom is pointing at with its database), Timemachine backup the lot to a dual raid HDD 2tb (effectively giving me 3 copies) continuously/automatically (NB For the windows users: this is the single switch Apple OSx backup application which as easily restores a full HDD as a single file that is integral to the OS and a sole reason alone to switch over!) and even then every so many weeks I make a copy to store in a fire/burglar proof safe... Having this setup has proven very robust, hassle free etc. But the backup sequence is dependent on having the copies on my PC and I do not like to spread my individual files over multiple HDD...

I have tried to describe my LR X100 observation/problem giving also some more information as to the fact that I am not a novice in digital photography. Three reasons for this:

1) I tend to like reading posts of other moderately advanced photo enthusiasts myself as they help me reflect on what I do;

2) It gives an indication of what I have done to understand/solve the problem at hand, so others can come in with relevant suggestions;

3) I like to brag about what I know ;-) even though I run into the occasional mishap myself as here with the x100/LR issue;

4) I do not like postings in general that answer honest calls for help/suggestions by patronising. By supplying additional information I hope to safeguard my thread form this. (obviously this does not always help, but alas, Nobody needs to take it personally, so I don't, and being on the net creates a thick skin soon enough anyhow)

If you are at the point where you have already run out of space on your primary drive and have no easy way of expanding the I'd suggest that you start a new catalogue on one of your external drives and copy the files on import and backup to a different drive.

It isn't terribly credible to say how clever you are then describe in detail how you got yourself into a not-clever situation, ask for suggestions, but take umbrage at a perceived patronising tone.

Anyway, despite my general love-hate opinions of Apple products, if you have the money they sometimes pull fantastic technologies out of the bag; the new Thunderbolt interface looks awesome.

For your next careful plan of your backup solution I suggest you factor in how to increase you data storage capacity when your primary store runs out. I strongly recommend keeping your data store separate to your operating system and programs.

Thanx for the suggestion. I'll consider this route seriously when I run into disk space troubles. I have done some reshuffling of files, did some cleaning up etc so will be able to postpone this action a little longer.

You are right. the cleverness part was accompanied by a wink as to indicate self-ridicule already. but you are right.

Agree.

Great website by the way.

Bingo.

The DR settings basically under expose a stop or two, to keep the light areas from blowing out. In Fuji's software, that's detected and taken care of automatically. In Adobe's, you gotta do some manual adjustment.

I use ACR, and yeah its a little "frustrating" to do that, but its also easy and not that time consuming.
I suspect you're using Auto DR or DR set on something other than 100. For some reason LR does not read the DR settings and at 200 and 400 they'll look underexposed and require much adjustment.
