Let us know what you decide and why. =)

I asked this same question in the Olympus forum of the E-10. The
E-10 and the 707 are the finalists for my next Digital camera. I
currently have an Oly C2100 UZI. I want a do everything camera
(size doesn't matter in this case) but I would also like to have
some action capabilities. I take pics alot while in fishing
tournaments and I need something that can focus quick and take a
shot of a moving subject.

I'm wondering if anyone could post some examples of shots taken at
sporting events or of any fast moving objects.

Thank you very much for your time and help,
Peter

Peter,

Even though you made your decision, maybe I can offer some advice. I have the UZi and recently, bougth the 717. I now use the 717 exclusively for my indoor sports shots. The only place where the UZi has the 717 beat is in the zoom range, but the 5MP makes up for that.

Ann, KD, and the other 707 owners, please don't beat me up for the following comments. :-)

Prior to buying the 717 & used a 707 extensively, and while it is a great camera, I did not consider it a useful enough upgrade from the UZi. It took excellent shots, as you can see from the examples posted, but compared to the UZi, I found the shutter lag and the shot to shot time to be way too slow. That said, I did find that after a certain amount of practise, you get use to the timing of the camera and automatically start working that into your picture taking flow. The end result is pictures that you were not able to take when you started out.

When you start using the 707, if you find it slow, please don't get discouraged. There are two avenues open to you. If you are able to return the 707, you can upgrade to the 717 with its faster autofocus and cycle time. If you can't return the 707, stick with it and you will find yourself adapting to it. It really is a great camera, just not as fast as the UZi.
Thank you all for the help. I stepped up to the plate and bought a
707 from a store trying to clear out the old stock. I got it for
$600 including shipping, hopefully a good deal. I didn't see
enough in the 717 for my novice skills to warrant the extra prce.

I appreciate all of your help,
Peter

I find the refresh rate of the viewfinder to be way too slow when panning on a car that is going past me at race speeds. Only way I can catch them is to zoom very little, then do a lot of cutting and cropping after with Paintshop or Photoshop. These digital cameras have a long way to go to improve their digital viewfinders.

This picture is actually about 1/4 the full picture size, taken with the F707 this year at Watkins Glen.

This was taken about 25 years ago with my old faithful Canon 35mm SLR (digitized from a slide - also taken at Watkins Glen). This is the full picture size; no cropping necessary. Could easily follow the car even though it was moving at least 50 MPH more than the car above it!

It's interesting that you bring this up because the deal fell through with the 707 so I decided to pay the extra and buy the 717. I ordered it today. Hopefully I'll have it early next week.

Thanks,
Peter

I have both the E-10 and the F717. I have been shooting various sports with the e-10 for almost two years. IMO the viewfinder and the faster manual zoom of the E-10 makes it a better choice. The 707 does not have the manual zoom feature.

I took the F717 out several times late this fall to shoot some soccer matches. It worked but the EVF is nowhere near as easy for me to use to follow action as the optical viewfinder of the E-10. Again I want to tell you that this could be because of my familiarity with the E-10 but the 717 is not the first EVF camera I have owned. I had a CD1000 prior to my E-10 and can remember being instantly impressed and at home with the viewfinder when I switched to the E-10 even after using the CD1000 for six months. Since you have been shooting with the UZI the EVF may be more acceptable to you.

Both cameras are fast enough especially in the shutter lag area with the E-10 being slightly faster than the 717 firing after a half press. I believe the 707 is a bit slower than both. Image quality from all is certainly up to the task as well.

One thing I found annoying with the 717 is the burst mode. If you set it to burst mode you will get three shots whether you want three or not. The E-10 can be set to burst but if you do a press and release it will take one shot. I find that a very convienent and space saving feature. Also, and this is a killer, the 717 EVF goes blank after the first shot of a burst and remains blank while taking the other two. I ended up turning the feature off.

In short, so far at least, I prefer the E-10 for sports. The F-717 shines in other areas.

Thanks for the edit of the picture of Sian on the beam. I have placed the picture in my gallery along with others on pbase, I have given you the credit for editing the picture on the site. I hope you dont mind.

Thanks again.

Many thanks for the nice comments,
I also like the touch up of the picture.

The resolution is very low and I am trying with much higher resolutions. I needed to take many pics and didnt have the portablestorage to do so.

This pic was a quickie taken during a quiet moment at the gym. I was not at all prepared Just pointing the camera about chatting as usual and asked Sian to do her beam routine and voila.

Great pictures ! I am really impressed !!!

Do you remember which mode you use for taking these pictures (Auto-P, SCN, bracketing, multizone Focus or single zone ... ) ?? Do you do pre-focusing ?

Thanks a lot !

I had a 707 and used it alot for hockey and football. I now have a
717 and its much better for action than the 707, faster AF, better
WB, less grain at ISO 400 and full bright viewfinder with flash and
high shutter speeds. I use a Oly TCON14b.
717@400ISO

707@400ISO

as you can see the 717 @ 400 are clearer and sharper due to better
noise reduction and quicker AF I think.

Hi Peter

the 7x7 is not geared towards sports or tracking high speed action. You would be better off looking ata high end prosumer camera.good luck

I have been using both Paintshop Pro and Photoshop LE to retouch photos, but have NEVER been able to retouch blurred areas like you did. How did you do it?

Peter,

I went to the Army-Navy game today here in Okinawa and tried my 717 for the first time for sports shots. (Actually, I don't think I've really ever taken pictures like this before!) I'm not quite sure if I like them or not (didn't know what to expect), but you might have a look:

Peter-

Here are my best pictures from an Ohio State ice hockey game last month. These pictures were handheld with the B300 teleconverter added on. Something I would have done differenty was to manaully set the ISO to something higher in order to get a faster shutter speed. I did experiement with that last night but need to do some cropping before I add updated pictures to this site. I've been very happy with my 707. I hope you enjoy these pictures...

Ray,

I have used Photoshop 6, but you can check if Paintshop Pro and Photoshop LE provide the same capabilties.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Open the image you want to retouch.

2. Layer> duplicate layer ... (This creates a duplicate of your image on a new layer on top of your original.)

3. Filter> Blur > Gaussian blur ... (This blurs your duplicate copy leaving the underlying original sharp image intact. You can adjust brightness on this duplicate copy as well.)

4. Layer > Add layer mask > Reveal all (This creates a mask over the duplicate for the next step.)

5. Use the pen tool with black colour to paint over the part you want to look sharp. (The colour black breaks the mask to let you see through to the original sharp image underneath.) If you make a mistake of painting over too much, you can correct by painting with the white colour to repair the broken mask. This step is best done with a stylus instead of a mouse.

Cheers,

Y.C.
