I can buy a Nikon D1 body (with 2 batts)in good condition for 1500$.
Is it worth to upgrade from an Olympus E10?

For now i only shoot in 2mpix resolution with the E10, don't need 4mpix for my kind of photography

Sounds like a good deal. The D1 in very clean and will give you a lot of fun. It's very fast and the AF is very precise. Definitely an upgrade from the E-10.

I have never owned a D1, but I've read enough posts by D1 owners and purchasers of used D1's to know that there is an issue when buying one over the number of times the shutter has been fired.

Even if everything else appears to be in top-notch condition, the shutter/mirror are mechanical and wear after extensive use. You may want more opinions from D1 owners who have experienced shutter failure or mis-function and what it costs for Nikon to replace or fix it.

It isn't used by a pro, never used in "the field". I'm going to test the thing intensively before buying

First, it should be USA model should you ever have to repair in the future. Second, it should have silent upgrade or have a serial number in the 503xxxx range. Thirdly, don't buy from a photojournalist. Good luck!

I agree with the posts here: Make sure you get a "low mileage" machine. I had to replace the shutter on my D1 and it cost $840. It's always a good idea to get a later series serial number.

I like to cherry pick Nikon's by taking advantage of what I call the "Doctor Dividend". You look around until you find the Nikon you want from someone who bought it because it was "the best", but only shot a few hundred shots before they realized that it was too much camera for them (or that they found out it isn't exactly the lightest greatest point-and-shoot camera around). These usually have "low miles", are USA models, and are nearly mint in condition with the original boxes.

Good luck,

--Steve.

Rob, is it the one on belgiumdigital.com ? If so, I believe it had several owners, so be carefull....Also, if you buy it, would you consider parting with the in-car battery charger ?

It IS the one on Belgium Digital, the guy is the second owner....what should i do?

He comes to me tomorrow with the camera and i can test it......what weak spots must i look for?

I don't think there are any particular weak spots. I would just look at the condition of the body, mirror, ccd, shutter and would certainly take some test shots and view them in detail (dead/hot pixels, etc...). Also look at the serial number and call Nikon to find out if it's an early or late model (ie, did it have the 'silent' upgrade people are talking about)...Batteries: I don't really know how, but I would try to find out how the batteries perform. If they're both almost dead, the you can add around €200/battery. I think I would just go out and shoot till the battery is dead. If it's more than 150 NEF's then it's ok (my batt. take 120 and 300 NEF's each...quite a difference)... As for the rest, you will just have to live with the workarounds for the few problems the D1 has, but I can assure you this: you won't even look back at your E10....let us know what the outcome is...

Oh, the guy says it comes with all the warranty paperwork...que ? This camera is for sure more than 1 year old, so don't let him fool you with the 'warranty'...
and euhhh, how about that in-car charger ?
