And you can see the improvement the HS10 lens brang over the old S100 tiny zoomy thing that a 50x zoom should only bring masterpieces for photos :P

Bring it on I say! After seeing the crap examples of the HS20 on steves digicams I might actually save some money if they keep up the zoom chase :)

LOL!

It's a gimmicky fad race.

The 'best' of the SP range that Oly brought out was the 570UZ. It had a pseudo 'manual' zoom ring & manual focus ring. Built in Pixel remapping AND a Bulb mode that went for several MINUTES! (You listening Fuji!)
However this latest turd from Oly doesn't even have an EVF!

And the LCD on that Oly, is the same out-of-date low res that has been around for 7 -8 years now! Hell my old Canon Pro1 had a slightly higher res LCD. And the Minolta A2 had a 1 Mega Pixel EVF - Back in 2004 !!! - I suppose at least the HS20 has a higher res LCD finally!

Are they trying to blur the lines between cameras & camcorders?

Even Camcorders today seem to be loosing their EVFs, thus forcing us all to hold our cameras like an idiot who doesn't know how to hold a camera, waving them around in-front of our faces!

Manufacturers really are taking consumers down an ever dumbed down 'self-perpetuating' spiral, that is less & less about the quality of the finale image, & more about shoving more sh*t in!

Just watch, they'll have Facebook & twitter integration next!
:-/

It'll no doubt sell like hot cakes. :-)

Lots of big numbers - 14MP, 36x zoom - no horrible fiddly manual controls - lots of scene modes. Nice big screen on the back so you can hold it out at arms length - all the better for passers-by to admire it.

I know several people who will totally love that. And would be quite happy and gleeful to tell me that their camera worked it out for them, none of that tiresome dialling in your own numbers like I have to do. ;)

It depresses me that this is the way models develop and pander to them.

But they make some good lenses.

Releasing a 36x zoom camera with NO VIEWFINDER!

I can't actually believe somebody pressed the "ok let's hit the factory with this"

Add the "almost no on body controls"

This is a horrible joke..

Fuji can goof up at times but seriously nobody would put this out. I'd love to see those full tele shots full of camera shake.

Don't laugh. In the real world of corporation sales the ONLY thing that counts is... sales.

So, if camera sells, it is a good camera, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Look at the mobile phones. Does ANY of them take pictures even close to reasonable? I don't think so, BUT it is absolutely irrelevant. What is important is - sales.

So, we can laugh, but being european and looking in transat planes at things being sold to US public (in those inflight catalogues) I sometimes wonder A LOT....

It does have some logic to it, though: the only way to use such long zooms reliably is from a tripod, and an EVF is just a pain to use in such a situation so a large LCD is much better.

Can't justify the lack of controls, though.
