Page 17 of the manual says...
It takes approximately 80 minutes to bring a fully discharged battery pack to a charge state of approximately 90%. It takes approximately 2 more hours to charge it fully.

I got my G3 yesterday. It took over 3 hours to charge the battery fully via the camera DC charger that comes with the camera - pretty much what the manual says. I charged an extra battery in my Lenmar Mach1 speed charger in about 30 minutes...
Of course, I don't know whether or not both batteries started out with the same amount of charge...both were brand new, though. Still, I'll opt for the Mach 1 method next time!

If you don't have an external charger yet, I strongly recommend to get one now! Charging directly from your camera is a dangerous thing when there is power surge that could damage you camera. I got Lenmar Mach 1 for $55 (S+H), and it worked like a charm. It only took 30-45 minutes to fully charge the Mach 1! Initially, I got the LenMar BCV-L11 from batterybarn. It took 5-6 hours to charge my BP-511/BP-512. I quickly returned and got the Mach 1.
Batterybarn.com had the best service I have ever seen; I returned it the BCV-L11, then after 3 days, my full refund got posted on my discovercard right after! I am very impressed, and would consider purchasing more stuff from them in the future.

Are their any negatives to having a 1hour charger compared to the 3hour ones? Heat-related, or any other type or possibile negatives?

I got similar concerns, but after extensive research on this forum (you can search for Mach 1) and its spec on lenmar.com, I am convinced it is a good charger. It actually won the CES 2002 Innovations Award( http://lenmar.com/press_cont_12_14_01.asp ). I figured out that if Lenmar, a very creditable power company, claimed it actually can extend the life of the battery up to 5 times longer than traditional chargers, it gets to be true to some degree. My battery was actually not hot at all after fully charged. One time, I forgot and left it there for ~ 2 hours, it was not hot at all.
There were great discussions of Mach 1 did not charge to 100%, but someone clarified that the voltmeter actually showed full capacity. So, the conclusion has been that the built-in G3 charger is a dumb charge (it's actually true, since if you put back in a fully charged BP-511 few seconds after it was fully charged, the built-in charger would start charging again!), so you shouldn't trust its blinking light system). I have not really counted how many pictures I can take with battery charged by Mach 1, but strong I feel it is the same. But, what really makes me happy is its super fast charging which you will appreciate when you travel especially on the road.
There seems other good chargers out there, like the smart Maha MH-C777PLUS-II, but it costs so much, ~$90. I think the Mach 1 is a good buy. BTW, I got it from cdw.com, which only took few days to receive. Excellent service!
