Why is it that Canon and other lens manufacturers not design in Arca Swiss plates as a part of the lens collar?

Because Canon does not sell Arca Swiss style tripod clamps!

While Canon was designing their 1D bodies they could build in AS L bracket rails too.

Is the bracket OEM or after market? I was curious about OEM ones so we wouldn't have to purchase after market. It seems to me that it wouldn't take much more effort considering some of the prices of the big lenses.

thanks for the info; love the finger moulding for the grip also..... Too bad other manufacturers don't think ahead like these guys do. Guess it will occur to them eventually. BTW sent Canon an e-mail regarding this very subject they're looking into it (yeah right).

That is not the mount that came with my 50-500 OS. It does not have the bubble or an area-style foot. I had to buy a rail.

It was new in box, US warranty. I think I got it from B&H.

D.

The bubble appears to be on the other jaw of the ballhead mounted clamp.

My 50-500OS has the handle shown with the bevelling to go into an Arca-Swiss clamp.

I feel better with a Wimberly plate on the Sigma tripod mount as it has travel screws to limit forward and backward travel if the clamp is left slightly loose (the plate will not slide out) but now I have to worry about keeping the plate to Sigma tripod mount screw tight.
