My D-460z has a sharpness control with a choice of either normal or soft. The manual says soft is ideal for processing images on a computer but doesn't explain why. Could someone help me understand the pros and cons of either setting? Thanks very much.

The bottom line is your camera chooses an inferior method of sharpening.

You can sharpen more effectively using tools in software such as Photoshop.

There have been a few posts on this in the last couple of days, but in short, 'soft' means that the camera is not trying through it's internal software algorithms to sharpen the picture. If you are planning to do this on a computer, then it's best to start with an unaltered image so that you have the flexibility to make the changes yourself. Sharpening is one of the last steps you should perform when processing a picture on your computer, so it's best to start off with a picture in its "original" state.
