My single cousin has just adopted this beautiful little girl from China and included this photo, which I scanned, in her adoption announcement. I thought it would be nice to make a pencil sketch from it and give it to her framed as a gift, but I can't seem to get a handle on how to approach the vignetting because of the head cutoff. I've dodged out the dark shadow from the flash and evened out the background, changed the formatting to 8 x 10 vertically...and am stuck there. I also tried buZZing the image

and am not entirely pleased...if you have any suggestions as to how I should manipulate this image to make it more "sketchy" please chime in here.
TIA.

I was thinking I can't wait to see what some of the pro's here come up with but then an idea popped into my head. Perhaps you could go oval on the picture and crop everything, including the background, into a round curve around the childs face. Then the head crop would look much more intentional.

I don't think using buzz on it would work very well. Perhaps you could extend the canvas upwards and clone some hair to round off the head then do the pencil thing, I don't think it would have to be so perfect as the effect covers alot. You might inquire if there is a pic of the whole child as well, not indicating exactly why you want it.

of this darling little moppet. She's adorable!!! Cheers, Sandi

Isabel:

Here is my attempt. Don't get stuck on traditional 8x10, 5x7, etc. Crop it to 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 and you won't be sorry.

When viewing consider that I was working with only a 72dpi image. You can do better with a full resolution photo. The better the initial quality, the easier it is to produce a good output.

When I sharpened the photo, I used 223 @ 4.9 pixels, 0 threshold. The standard 500% at 0.8 just didn't do it for me.

The rest was standard pencil stuff.

Confession time: I was being chintzy...if I cropped to a standard size I could buy a standard from with a standard mat. One of these days I have to learn to cut mats and do my own framing. I brough two 8 x 10 prints in yesterday and without matte glass it's going to cost over $100 to frame them!
I will try again and just open the wallet to have it framed!
Thanks!!!

I've never liked pictures with the tops of heads missing...

try these two.
