Hello I am new to this forum. Greetings from Denmark.

I am the lucky owner of an XZ-1, which I got yesterday. Just a nice camera with great potential because of the lovely 1.8-2.5 lens. This is one of the first pictures I took of my kids yesterday.
Going on a trip to Austria next week, hope to post some more efter my trip.

Regards Carsten.

Nice picture! Very sharp and wonderful depth of field that really isolates your subjects. The only thing that looked odd in that picture was the hair. It looses much of the detail and looks almost painted. Is this the overly aggressive noise reduction that I keep reading about?

Carsten, welcome to OTF. You have good looking kids, and I look forward to your vacation photos.

Hi Zane.

Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure about the hair, it looks OK to me, you might be right.
Carsten.
I'm glad you said that. I tried to see what the OP is talking about, but could not find any area that was blurred or smeared.

Nice shots - as a matter of fact, they look great to me.

Look at the original, the hair is definetely smeared. But you don't see that when not pixel peeping, and the picture looks great :)

Yes, maybe I shouldn't be pixel peeping. I have been debating over this camera for a while now and love looking at all the wonderful pics posted up on this forum. Many of the online reviews of the XZ-1 mentioned the overly aggressive noise reduction. This picture is the first one that I've seen that fits the description in those reviews.

Just to make it clear what I'm referring to:

Anyway, very good picture. I was just trying to understand what all the reviews are taking about.

magnify anything big enough and you'll get smearing... Personally I looked pretty hard and couldn't see it. Pixel peepers should just shoot raw on this camera and you'll be fine.

It is a nice picture, taken on a nice camera.

This is not your first camera I take it. The pose and the composition show some expertise not seen on pictures from far too many offerings from first-time buyers.

Some of the pixel-peepers complaining - about any camera on any forum - are simply not in the market for any new camera. I got into the habit of checking the profile of complainers.

Enjoy your camera on your holiday.

Completely agree with Henry.

And I've never understood these pixel peepers. Its like standing nose-to-nose with someone and looking at their hair. Or printing a photo and having your eyes 1cm from it to look at the dots.
Or looking at a monitor/TV to see how large the pixels look.

It's a very odd way of looking at/admiring a photo which should be observed from a more sensible and normal distance.

Hello and welcome! Nice shot you took with your new cam - you sure will have lots of fun with it!

Beautiful children... but I'm sure you were already aware of that :P

You are going to love the XZ-1! The more I learn, the more I appreciate what it has to offer!

I have seen the smearing that others have talked about. Primarily it is most noticeable (to me) in grass. i am beginning to shoot in Raw, and have been impressed with the results! However, I could return to shooting only in Jpeg and continue to be perfectly happy with the XZ-1.
Have fun on your trip, and post lots of pics when you return!

Hello everyone.

Thank you for your interest and kind words. Yes my kids are photogenic, and sometimes a little reluctant to stand in front of the camera, but sometimes they let their dad take a few pictures and can relax in front of the camera and we can all enjoy a nice shot, and it's ultimately whats it all about, being some 4o years behind many different cameras, it is certainly the conclution I have come to.
Regards Carsten.
