Thanks for the samples, they look good.

I'm having a hard time deciding between the 50mm or the 35mm 1.8 G.

Have you had experiences with both? And what made you decide to get the 50mm?

Thanks in advance.

According to EXIF viewer, the O.P. was shooting with a D700 so the 35 wasn't an option. Looks real good at f/1.8 on a D700. My 35mm f/1.8 doesn't look as good as that at f/1.8 on a D300 but it steps right up at f/2.8.

Ah ok, I didn't notice that.

Well I'm switching to Nikon, and getting a D5000 primarily for these inexpensive primes. So for just an everyday lens for street, sports, and lowlight photography, would you recommend the 50mm over the 35mm?

If you're buying only one and puting it on dx, I'd buy the 35. I have the 35 and 50 (1.4). The 50 can be tight inside and may not be quite wide enough for you.

Best,

Don

Hi Joe,

Have you tried pushing any situations where you might see CA?

I'm on a D3 and am thinking of picking up this lens...I had the 85f1.8 and it CA'd like crazy so had to sell it and pick up the 85f1.4 D which is wonderful.

Thanks for your info,

Dan

Yes, the 50mm can be tight inside. But it depends on how you use it. For individuals or candids from a distance, it is fine. If given a choice between this and the 35mm, I choose the later.

Joe,

I just got the 50G 1.8 also. I'm using it on a D700 and find it to be super sharp, with wonderful color rendition and pretty quick and accurate focusing. I have not tried the 35G yet but for now I will stick with this little wonderful 50G (1.8) on FX. After, like so many, paying thousands for lenses I feel like I've hit the consumer lottery when I use the 50G. It forces me to move around much more (and use my feet) but I also feel that it is forcing me to see images better and look for better composition and shots within shots. It is also a wonderful feeling to work with a lens that you know is good and you can now allow yourself to experiment more with the camera. I'm having the time of my life!!

Just my observation.

It does have some purple fringing along high contrast edges like a white t-shirt, for example but the CA is slight and not nearly as bad as the 851.8D

Thanks Albert...checked one out today at the camera store.

It's a tad lighter than my 50f1.4 AFS and the price is right so I might pick one up in a bit...so many lens so little time!

I agree my friend - this new 50mm offering is IMO one of the best bargains to come down the pike in a long, long time. It cranks out finely rendered colors, is fast enough to cover most situations and is light as the proverbial feather. My next NYC venue for this petite glass is the subway & Grand Central Station followed by a walk in NYC 843 acre backyard aka Central Park - been getting questions about how much CA this glass produces. No better real world test then leafy branches against a bright sky. My guess is if one stops down no more then 5.6 CA should be minimal & correctable.
Will post more samples Sunday & Monday.

Here's a CA quick fix vid

Nice set of pictures Joe...

I like the cat ...almost looks 3D with its face poking out of my laptop..

(By the way, I have 50mm f1.8 - the non-G version and I am not using it that frequently on D700, as I have Nikon 24-70mm and like the colors of it, compared to the 50mm prime. I need to try the G version and see how they come).

Cheers
Rahul
