256 memory card problems??

Been reading some of the posts on this site regarding corruption problems with 256meg memory cards, and its got me worried.

I am about to purchase my first digicam (S45). I had intended buying a 256 card, but should I play it safe and get 2x 128 cards?

This has nothing to do with the size of the card, it just depends on the manufacturer that same Canon Cameras might get problems with.

Get a Sandisk Card (whatever size) and you are on the safe side.

Got a Dane Elec 256 mb, works fine.

Lexar 12x 256 works fine with my S230.

I bought a 256Mb Fuji X20 with my G3 and am very impressed with the speed. A Superfine/Large image only occupies the camera for about 1-2 seconds!

Also read a review on Sandisk, I think in the memory forum on this site, that rated them the slowest by a long way, of all the manufacturers.

I am using a Vinking 256MB for my s230, and impressed with the speed. Works perfect for me !

The advantage of having two cards with you - if one goes haywire, you can take it out of the camera immediately and continue shooting on the other. You can then attempt recovery of any images on the first card when you get back to a PC.

Possible disadvantage: you're more likely to lose a CF card if it's not in the camera.

I'm one of the people who reported a glitch with a 256MB card. I don't know if the size of the card has anything to do with it. I used the card without any problems for 2 or 3 weeks before the glitch occurred. I've since re-formatted it, and will continue to use it to see what happens.

The glitch: browsing through images in camera playback mode - everything fine. Switched the camera off. A few moments later switched the camera back on again (this time by sliding the lens cover open for record mode) - camera reports 'CF-Error' and the card is suddenly corrupted. I hadn't even recorded anything new to the card between it working and not working. PC reports the card as 'unformatted'. PhotoRescue successfully provides jpeg thumbnails for all the images that were on the card. It reports a CRC read error near the start of the card.

i use a Transcend 24x 256MB - fast and no problems.

Buy one 256 MB - Maybe later you'll buy another one - for holiday etc. Sometimes you take many pics and don't have time (or accu power) to check and erase - then it is good to have enough memory.

If you take fullsize pics in Superfine quality you'll get about 110 - 150 pics on a 256 MB card.
