Hi,

I am planning to buy Samsung NX10, and my dad already have Zenit with Helios 44 2/58 and I was wondering what type of adapter to I have to buy to start using this Helios?

Thank you.

PS. very nice shots :-)

The study of the Helios-44 is an art form in itself.

There are quite a few versions - all pretty cheap and a clone of the Ziess Biotar.

Very sharp lens across the range.

Older ones were "plain 44" later ones went 44M-1 through to "7". They were standard issue on Zenit cameras out of the shops along with the Industar 50-2 which is another mean lens in itself. But the Helios is better. I think the M stands for "multicoated".

You can buy a nice Helios 44M-4 for less than US$40 and it is cheap not because it is "no good" but simply market economics says that there is a huge number about for sale.

Note that there is a pin in the back of the lens that allows the lens to be focused wide open and it pushed in by a mechanical linkage on slr shutter press when it "jumps" to the set aperture. Many M42 adapters don't keep this pin depressed and the lens is effectively continually wide open.

This can be fixed by cutting a cotton bud stem (q-tip in the USA) to the pin protrusion length and inserting it as a pin-collar under the lens back plate. The plate needs to be removed and hopefully you will not only save the pin from falling inside but manage to keep it inserted while you put the collared pin back in place. With the collar the lens works as a full manual lens and the aperture is always as set by the aperture ring.

Nice sharp pictures, nice lens.
