Okay, I got excited enough to plaster this in 4 forums...............

In case you're interested in getting a simple slave cell to turn your the old battery operated strobe lying around the house into a slave flash unit capable of triggering AFTER the preflash from your camera, WEIN is now manufacturing their popular Peanut and Peanut XL slave cells for digital cameras.

The key difference is the delay circuit incorporated into the slave cells.

Mosey on over to http://www.bhphotovideo.com and do a search - try "wein pn".

Good news indeed!

The units are already shipping.

High time Wein got into the act if you ask me. They make the best slave cells, period.

FYI, if you're going to buy a strobe to use as a slave unit and you want to plug in the Wein Peanut directly** into the sync socket of the flash unit, only the following will work AFAIK:

1. Vivitar 285HV

2. Vivitar 283

3. National PE-201M

The latter flash is absolutely affordable - USD$15. GN20 (meters), recycles in 2 secs with Alkalines, 1 sec with NIMH.

Else, ensure your strobe comes with a sync cord.

Tan,

I remember reading about these in a recent shutterbug. Do you know if they work with Nikon's DX flashes? (Nikon's DTTL system fires LOTS of preflashes. (12, 16, something like that) I think I remember reading that the Wein digital peanuts can only skip a limited number of preflashes.

Also, this isn't as useful as it might be, since the slaves will throw off the preflash-based exposure calculated by the camera's DTTL/ETTL system. In most situations you're better off setting the camera and flash to manual mode and setting up your flash output power yourself.

Duncan, I think you will find the Wein slave cells or any 'digital' slave flash more useful for use with a consumer camera like an E-10 or G2. My post was intended more for folks like that.

Does the slave throw off your on your consumer camera TTL? Possibly (sometimes not; depending on the camera). But the slaves are basically there to lend additional modelling, fill, or backlight.

I have such slaves to very good effect indeed. I am sure a lot of folks do too.

Better cameras now have an option to turn off pre-flash but I was an early adopter of the Dimage 7 and had little choice but to spend $80 on a Digislave. I don't need it now and sold it but might not be a bad idea to get the inexpensive Wein to play around with my P&S camera.

I feel bad for anyone who just bought a Digislave SA-10

Well, early adoption has it's early adoption issues.........

Anyway, I think we'll still see that most consumer digicams will still have NO ability to turn off the preflash.

I have tested one that could though - the Oly C5050.

Sure glad I dug back far enough here. I've been looking everywhere for an alternative to the Digislave to use my trusty old 283 with my Oly 3000. This looks like just the solution, can't figure why it took Wein so long.

Particularly since they announced the digital peanut in February at the PMA show. I've heard rumors that the Wein subsiduary is no longer owned by Tiffen, so I imagine that may have been a factor.

It really hurt that I couldn't use my two twenty-five plus year old 283's on my 3100z. Although they seem to work fine, I checked the voltage and of course it was sky high. So I just ordered a Digital Peanut for quick and easy two flash work and a Safe Sync for normal slave and external flash only. Should be here tommorrow or Thurs.

The wein digital slave came in and it works just fine on my 283. Every ad I looked at said it plugged directly into the 283 & 285...well, not exactly. It does plug into the pc end of the sync cord, but not the flash unit itself.

I also have recieved my peanut. Actually it does plug right into my 283's. But it is not a perfect fit. At first I didn't think it fit because it takes some force to insert it. Just touching the peanut while it is plugged in will set off my flash (annoying). The tip doesn't have the little nylon piece at the end like the Vivitar PC chord.
As David said it does fit better on the PC sync chord.
