I have a D3S....Often I enjoy using the compact 35mm 2.0 lens on this beast.I would like to buy the highest IQ compact in the 24-28 focal range.Having the D3S lens speed not a big factor..Just want the best IQ lens.
I like the IQ of my 24/2.8D on the D700. And since you already carry the 35/2, the 24/2.8 would offer more variety in perspective than you'd gain by adding a 28mm lens.

the AF 24/28 f/2.8 lenses don't tend to do that well in lens reviews

but the 28/2.8 AI-S only ever has good things said about it the forums, never seen a technical review of it though. the AF 28 is not an AF version of the AIS (different optical arrangement)
( I've used none of the above )

There are a number of comparative/benchmark reviews out there, perhaps ones that would draw deletion here, I have no idea. Hope this helps.

None of those appear to address the 28 vs. 24 question posed by the original poster. When I was making my buying decision, I found very few reviews of the 24/2.8D on the full frame platform.

The 28/2 ai is also excellent. Irks one of the best lenses there is for ghosting and flare resistance. Sad I sold mine before I got my D700.
