Interesting! Kinda pricey, but may be good insurance for the lens. I don't obsess about dusty or smudged lenses, but it would be nice to have a permanent lens cap.

I am curious about the material. "tempered crystal protector, High Quality Schott Glass / Harder than Stainless Steel, made from German clear optical glass."

Cheers,

Interesting. This installation is similar to what I had suggested to the pilot who was seeking a polarizer for his hz35w. Too bad they don't make a circular polarizer too.

As for the glass being harder than steel, even ordinary glass is harder than steel so that isn't much of a claim.

Their point is that the coating is harder than steel, not the glass. I suspect that's not true of most filter or lens coatings.

I decided to pull the trigger on it. I'll let folks know what it's like when I've received it and had some time to see if I can detect any issues with keeping it on the camera.

Thanks.

I will be looking for your report, but if it takes too long, I may just have to buy it, so for both our sakes, I hope all goes well.

The info says that it can be removed, cleaned & reapplied. Wonder if you need new adhesive. Oh, tell us where you purchase it too, 'cause there are several models on ebay.

Thanks,
kev

Whether it is the coating or the glass itself I think that stating that something is "harder than steel" gives some people the false impression that it is stronger than steel.

The impression it gave me was that it is more scratch-resistant than coatings that do not use nanotechnology. I was actually surprised to find out that coatings could be as scratch-resistant as steel, so it was a helpful bit of information. I don't think generating a false impression of strength is their intention. They seem to be stressing ease of cleaning and resistance to scratching, not tensile strength or flexibility.

Search eBay for "ACMAXX LENS ARMOR UV MRC FILTER for Samsung TL500 / EX1" and you should find the correct model.

If then intent is to convey that the surface is scratch resistant, then why not describe it as "harder than glass" which itself is harder than steel?

Here's what they say:
1. Scratch, Dust and Water resist

Tempered crystal ACMAXX Lens Armor with Nano Multi-Resistant coatings makes it scratch, dust and water proof. Surface hardness reaches 6.5H V.S. regular Lens coating fewer than 5H. i.e Stainless steel is 5.5H

Do you really find that misleading, or are you being a stickler for something? In any event, 6.5 is as hard as a steel file, which has to be harder than the coatings on most lenses or filters.

Got the filter. It's a thin piece of multi-coated glass that is easily applied to the camera and covers the lens opening. So far, no obvious effects on images. I don't generally include point sources of light in my images, so the occasional extra flare, if there, is not much concern. If you are the type who buys protective filters for your lenses, then this filter makes sense. Having said that, I have yet to scratch the lens of any P&S cameras I own, but I'm quite fond of the EX1/TL500 and figured protecting its lens was worthwhile.

Thanks for the feedback. I may just order one. Can you please try scratching it with keys & maybe poke it with some hard, sharp objects & let us know how it holds up? I would appreciate it! ;)

You say that you have never scratched a P&S lens, but the TL500 seems much more vulnerable with it's ample glass real estate & lack of auto lens cover.

Took a chisel to it. No harm! Amazing!

I don't think it is too misleading, just odd that despite their description we still don't know whether the coating is harder than the glass beneath it.

Except for the slightly sketchy English, this description is no more vague than what I've seen about other recent multi-coated filters. The hardness of the underlying glass is essentially irrelevant, I think, as it's not what comes in contact with the outside world.

I've been using this protective filter for a while now and so far have not noticed any image degradation. The filter seems to repel dust and is, anyway, very easy to clean. I like it and recommend it to those willing to spend the $30 it is sellilng for.

that's good to hear! I hope you're also not experiencing any increased flare? Do you notice any difference with the UV coating they talk about on the website?

I don't notice any differences at all, either positive or negative.
