this is the hardest camera i have had to learn - it is really hard work getting used to it but when you do, there is nothing like it

so if you are used to getting your settings done on a DSLR or M43 camera in a couple of days with consistent results after that, you will be disappointed with x100 - but if you persevere like i have you might love it

here are my settings in case it helps someone:
  • JPEG
  • Astia mostly but sometimes Velvia (esp outdoors) and then desaturate green
Focus
  • mostly manual focus using AFL button- focus and recompose and shoot multiple shots without re-focusing
  • when using AF use smallest area
  • OVF when manual focus
  • with autofocus use OVF and EVF - switch to EVF when use are less than 4 ft
  • enable distance scale in OVF and EVF
  • never use multi area focus
Exposure
  • auto ISO lowest shutter is 1/60 and highest ISO is 3200
  • use average metering occasionally spot (never multi)
  • adjust using + - exposure comp
  • mostly Aperture priority and set at f/4 and open up or close down from there
Flash
  • use only as fill in and adjusted to -2/3
  • use wireless trigger on shoe mount for external flash (needs to be enabled)
Accessories
  • mini soft release
  • luigi leather strap
some B&W family snaps

and now color

Never went through a hate-it phase. After a couple of months, still in the learning curve and loving every minute of it. For me the glitches can be worked around without much fuss.

Thanks for the useful guidance. Glad you "came around". ;)

And what lovely girls you have to adorn your work!

Damned, I was almost missing this thread - glad I didn't.

Those are great shots! just love them - great eye for composition.

Thanks for sharing those shooting tips too.

Great article and photos!

Wondered if you are using auto DR or setting DR. Sounds like you are doing manual exposure adjustments so probably not but I thought I would check.

Also, what color, highlight, shadow, and sharpening settings are you using.

I am now thinking of selling my GH2 setup

Hi,
Thanks for sharing. One thing I perceived is that Multi metering seems giving you a bit depth so the pictures can have a 3D feeling when used properly vs Average metering is kind of flat.
Don't believe that - its a false assumption.

Maybe that perception is because you were in Shutter priority (or full auto) and the MM calculated a less exposed shot, resulting in a bigger aperture and more subject isolation or "3D feeling" , just that...

If you were in Average metering and corrected exposure manually, it would result in exactly the same shot... once the camera picks the shutter/aperture combination, it doesn't matter whatever was the metering or if it is even in manual exposure...

Regards

First two shots are fantastic.
